    3. I've recently discovered that Kezia WALLER last seen in the 1841 Census of Two Waters, Hemel Hempstead married Joseph GEARY born in Gt.Berkhamstead.c.1821. They had two children before they sailed to NSW on the 'Thomas Artbuthnot' on 17 January 1849. From the information I've been given (transcription of Joseph's death from NSW Registry of BMD's) Joseph's father's name was also Joseph and he was a 'Farmer'. I'm unable to find a baptism for Joseph GEARY and the 1861 Census only has 'GEARY' names born in Northchurch which is of course possible as the two places are so close together. There is a Joseph GEARY aged 72 (widower) lodging with a family in Bushey although he says he's an ag.lab. and not a farmer. I'm hoping that someone will have access to the 1841 Census when I should find Joseph at home with his parents. Many thanks for any help. Sue (Kent)

    3. Hi Sue, I would think a farmer at the age of 72 would be an Ag labourer, agriculture.. meaning farming. Also when peoples occupation was noted in the census, it was not always stated by the person themselves. In my case of blacksmiths, they were also called farriers, smithys and iron mongers. I have just discovered that my Great Great Grandfather said he was a widow in the 1871 census, in fact his wife did not die until 1874. In 1871 he was 71 years of age and his death certificate in 1880 stated he died from senile decay.. I would think that senility had set in by 1871 or he had been separated from his wife for so long that he thought he was a widow, or others around him assumed he was a widow. His wife had not lived with him since 1861, according to census information but with their daughter in a different county.
