In the 1861 census John Ives, then 36 years of age, gave his birthplace as Hertford. Unfortunately he did not name a town or village. However from his birth certificate he gave his father's name as William and who was a farmer. By 1861 John had married Hannah Platt, daughter of Richard Platt, who was born in Finchley, and had moved to Bermondsey and had five children.
