Hi, I am a returning subscriber who has been away for quite a while. I have recently found an ancestor in Watford Workhouse in 1871. My first thought was to email Watford Library to enquire if they have these records. I went to the Herts. Website but there is nothing there about the local studies/history section of Watford Central Library. Can anyone advise me-has it closed, is everything now at HALS (because talking to them is VERY protracted- I already have a query with them re St Albans Gaol regarding a BKM ancestor)? Any help at all would be great. Best wishes Sherry Landa (Salford LAN)
Sherry: A Lot of the records for HALS is now being stored at London Metropolitan Archives. I know this because I spent 4 years looking for my husband's adoption records, constantly being told they could be obtained through HALS (as he was born in Watford), talking to everyone, I am sure, that works there and yet still nothing. It was simply by sure luck I found them at LMA -give it a try Judy BC Canada ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Sherry Landa" <sherry@slanda.fsnet.co.uk> Reply-To: ENG-HERTFORDSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com To: ENG-HERTFORDSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [HRT] Watford Workhouse records Date: Sat, 18 Jun 2005 09:20:53 +0100 Hi, I am a returning subscriber who has been away for quite a while. Hi Sherry Try this site for workhouses http://www.users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouses/watford I have telephoned Watford Centra Library and no inmate records survived but the 1871 census will show all inmates and they have meetings records but the would mean searching through the records to see if the person you want is mentioned I hope this gives some information you require. Thank you so much, Ron. You are an absolute star (and an angel).
