    3. Can anyone supply any info about the London orphanage (perhaps not its full or correct name) which stood near Watford Junction station (on the left of the line going towards London)? I think I recall seeing the building still standing when flashing by on the train recently, but is it still a school of any sort? Donald Massey

The London Orphan School was founded in 1813, the present buildings erected in 1870 near the railway station are of brick in a modern Elizabethan style and consists of a centre block comprising the dining hall, board room & administrative offices, boy's schoolroom, laboratory, swimming bath & boy's houses: a girl's wing, comprising school rooms, dormitories & swimming bath; at the back is an infirmary and at the front a chapel. Hope this is of some help to you. Regards Ron Newland Ruislip Middlesex UK NEWLAND & COLLER family history

    3. Thanks for that, Ron I was asking for a lady who originally asked about the school on Channel 4 Family Tree Teletext, recently moved to pages 174/5. 3. Hi The London Orphanage is still there, but has been converted into "up market" apartments. The original buildings are still there, including the church. Quite a few new buildings have been added, but unlike most developments these days, the new buildings are very much in keeping with the originals. I never thought I'd hear myself say such a thing, but: my compliments to the developers. The church has, I believe, been desanctified and converted into more appartments. I know little of the history of the place, in fact you probably know more about it than I do Don, but Orphanage Road is still there, being now a major access road to the Radlett Road area, and the other new housing estates there. It's recently been made into expensive apartments - a twist of fate wouldn't you agree!
