    3. Is there some one on the list who could look for Samuel Hammett born C1822 Dorset and his wife Rebecca Hammett born C 1824 in Colliers End Hertfordshire, they may be in Colliers End or perhaps Broxbourne, and would have a daughter Jane aged about 4 years with them ...... Any help would be most welcome ....... thanks in advance ... Peter Hammett

    3. Peter, I, too, could only find the Samuel and Rebecka HAMMETT that Maureen found on the 1851 census (HO107/1535, folio 626, page 11). I deciphered his occupation as Porter and his place of birth as Hertfordshire, Little Munden (Ancestry has it down as Tring). Rebecka's place of birth looks like Somersetshire, Stockland?? I have, however, found Rebecca on the 1861 census of Bebington, Cheshire - don't know if you already have it, but in case not here it is: PRO Ref: RG9/2645, folio 117, page 29 Queens Place Rebecca HAMMETT Lodger Mar 37 Herefordshire Whare Jane do do Un 13 do do They are lodging in the household of a John Mathison who is a House Joiner, aged 34, born Northumberland and his wife Isabella and family. Presumably Herefordshire should read Herts and Whare should be Ware??? Can't find Samuel though, he seems to be very elusive!! He is obviously still alive though, because I found both he and Rebecca plus daughter, son in law and grandchildren on the 1871 census of Islington (RG10/308, folio 54, page 38). Let me know if you want full details. 3. Another possibility but still no Jane! 1851 census HO107/1704 Folio 175 Page 2 Cheshunt, Hertfordshire Samuel HEMMETT Head Mar 28 Agr Labourer b Dorset Rebecca HEMMETT Mar 26 b Herts George HEMMETT Son 1 1/2 b Herts BVRI 2nd edition has this marriage Samuel Pope HAMMET (father Samuel POPE) m Rebecca BAWCOCK (father James BAWCOCK) 1 Oct 1850 in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire so looks like both George and Jane should be in the GRO indices as BAWCOCK and sure enough... Jane BAWCOCK Births Dec 1846 Ware reg district Vol 6 page 613 George Henry Draper BAWCOCK Births Sep 1849 Ware Vol 6 Page 555 I looked again at the 1851 census and there was a Jane BAWCOCK age 4 b Standon, Herts with her grandmother Judith BAWCOCK (age 59 widow Green grocer b Hadham), 2 aunts (Jane age 23 and Henrietta age 14 - both born Standon ) and 1 uncle (Thomas age 20 Poulterer b Standon) all living in Colliers End Road, Standon. Any chance this is the missing Jane? 3. Hi Pete Tricky pair these two..... 1851 Census doesn't show any exact match for this family. In fact the closest I could find was the following Samuel HAMMET b 1825 Tring Hertfordshire Living in Shoreditch Middlesex Occ Pastor? Rebeaka HAMMET b 1828 Shoreditch Somerset Living in Shoreditch Middlesex Occ Glover No children mentioned The handwriting on the original document is barely legible so I have my doubts whether 'Tring' is correct and occupation Pastor is my best guess, not necessarily correct. regards Maureen ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pete Hammett" <pops.hammett@tesco.net> To: <ENG-HERTFORDSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, November 23, 2005 6:54 AM Subject: [HRT] 1851 census lookup - HAMMETT > Is there some one on the list who could look for Samuel Hammett born C1822 > Dorset and his wife Rebecca Hammett born C 1824 in Colliers End > Hertfordshire, they may be in Colliers End or perhaps Broxbourne, and > would have a daughter Jane aged about 4 years with them ...... > > Any help would be most welcome ....... thanks in advance ...
