Hello everyone! I was wondering if anyone on this list has ever undertaken the job of a ONE NAME SURNAME STUDY? That is to concentrate on just one surname and gather all the records possible. Try to connect all lines. I'm thinking of trying this with one of my surnames *PEGRAM* and all variations. Just wondering what kind of pitfalls to look for and try to avoid....in other words anyone have any advice for me. I've started by making a GEDCOM with just this family name and of course surnames from marriages from the LDS microfilms of parish records. Is this what I want to do....is this the best way to go? I'm going to use census records as well for sources. What other record sources should I use....not sure if wills would be available on film? The reason I'm thinking of this is because I had gaps in christening records for my family line. I've been ordering microfilms from the LDS for surrounding parishes and have filled in some of my gaps. Have found 2 transcription errors this way. Also these films have the burial records and sometimes it helps me to eliminate possibilities for my family line. I've still got some brickwalls but they are slowly coming down. Any advice will be appreciated. Theresa E. Smith Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, USA
Dear Theresa, - and anyone else thinking of a One Name Study, I'm a GOON, and yes, it always make me smile. My study is in it's infancy and arose from an unusual surname in my family history. I have to say that it takes 2nd place to all the other lines I pursue, unlike some other Goons who seem to concentrate on the one name. But all Goons belong for a variety of studies - this is what makes being a Goon so interesting. I belong to the mailing list - and there are so many friendly, helpful and knowledgeable folk on it who have a wide variety of interests, geographical and historical knowledge, plus computer literacy, that it makes belonging a pleasure! We have a magazine/Journal 4 times a year which is full of useful articles. Do have a look at the Goons website: http://www.one-name.org/register.shtml (I've looked at the Register and no-one is researching PEGRAM, so go for it!) As for Wills, have a look at the National Archives site: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ It's amazed me what one can download for 3.50 GB for each original Will. Other than that, I think you are in a fair way to have started your One Name Study. Join us;-) Best wishes, Ruth in Brum (Birmingham, England) > I was wondering if anyone on this list has ever undertaken the job of a ONE NAME SURNAME STUDY? Hi Theresa, I have been doing a one-name study of the surname FOSKETT plus variants for over 30 years. I am no longer a member of GOONS (Guild of one-name-studies) as I couldnt justify the cost of a year's membership. However, at one time they did have a ruling about the minimum amount of information one should attain in order to participate: From memory this included, All entries from the GRO Indices of Births, Marriage and Deaths from 1837. All entries from the PCC wills index All entries from current telephone directories (this I never did as I couldnt really see the relevance to my genealogical research.) I am sure there is a far more up todate list now which would include IGI, online census returns, etc. Although like you, I have tried to create gedcom files for all my information, I find it far more useful to maintain the data in excel spreadsheet files which I can sort in anyway I wish - far more flexible than most Genealogy programs. My own list, which is far from complete but gives you a general idea is as follows: <>GENERAL REGISTRATION * GRO BIRTHS ENGLAND AND WALES 1837 – 2003 * GRO MARRIAGES ENGLAND AND WALES 1837 – 2003 * GRO DEATH ENGLAND AND WALES 1837 – 2003 * BIRTH, MARRIAGE AND DEATH CERTIFICATES PARISH REGISTERS * BEDFORDSHIRE * BUCKINGHAMSHIRE * CAMBRIDGESHIRE * DEVON * ESSEX * GLOUCESTERSHIRE * HEREFORDSHIRE * HERTFORDSHIRE * HUNTINGDONSHIRE * KENT * LANCASHIRE * LEICESTERSHIRE * LINCOLNSHIRE * LONDON * MIDDLESEX * NORTHAMPTONSHIRE * OXFORDSHIRE * SURREY * SUSSEX * WARWICKSHIRE * MISCELLANEOUS CENSUS * 1841 CENSUS * 1851 CENSUS * 1861 CENSUS * 1871 CENSUS * 1881 CENSUS * 1891 CENSUS * 1901 CENSUS OTHER BIRTH, MARRIAGE AND DEATH INFORMATION * PALLOTS MARRIAGE INDEX * PALLOTS BIRTH INDEX * VICAR GENERAL’S MARRIAGE LICENCES (INDEX) * BOYDS MARRIAGE INDEX * BRITISH VITAL RECORDS INDEX (1ST Edition) * BRITISH VIATL RECORDS INDEX (2ND Edition) * NATIONAL BURIAL INDEX (2ND Edition) * INTERNATIONAL GENEALOGICAL INDEX (IGI) MILITARY AND NAVAL RECORDS * COMMONWEALTH WAR GRAVES COMMISSION * WORLDWAR I MEDAL ROLLS * SOLDIERS WHO DIED IN THE GREAT WAR * ROLL OF THE GREAT WAR * SOLDIERS SERVICE PAPERS 1914 – 1920 * SOLDIERS DISCHARGE TO PENSION 1914 – 1923 * SOLDIERS SERVICE PAPERS 1883 – 1913 * SOLDIERS DISCHARGED TO PENSION 1883 – 1913 * ROYAL NAVY RATINGS 1853-1923 * QUEEN’S SOUTH AFRICAN MEDALS (CAVALRY) * AUSTRALIAN WW2 SERVICE RECORDS WILLS * INDICES * TRANSCRIPTIONS * NOTES LAY SUBSIDY ROLLS AND OTHER TAX LISTS TRADE DIRECTORIES AND POLL BOOKS MONUMENTAL INSCRIPTIONS, OBITUARIES AND CEMETERY RECORDS * HIGHGATE CEMETERY, LONDON * ABNEY PARK CEMETERY, LONDON LONDON GAZETTE EMIGRATION * Ellis Island Immigration, USA * Castle Garden Immigration, USA * Unassisted Immigration to Victoria, Australia <>MEDIAEVAL RECORDS COATS OF ARMS MANOR ROLLS REFERENCES Dont let the length of the list stop you - I repeat - I have been doing this for 30 years Hope this helps Sandra Smith (nee FOSKETT) tesmith40@comcast.net wrote: >Hello everyone! > >I was wondering if anyone on this list has ever undertaken the job of a ONE NAME SURNAME STUDY? Sandra - could you advise what kind of structure you use for your Excel sheet? I have tried to imagine what one would look like but got quickly overwhelmed. Also, is there a program to convert GEDCOMS to Excel? Hi Chris, You may like to look at my site. I have used excel to keep the various data that I have found over the years and share it with other researchers. I must admit that I have not up-dated it for a while but I believe it has been helpful to others to find LINES information in Hertfordshire and to then find me. The database contains the excel LINES information for all the LINES I have found including my ancestors and others that I have not tied into my direct family. I then have a couple of other word documents relating to my family. I do not have the greatest computing skills but one day will get back to the database and improve it.. I guess that will be when I have retired. http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/~lines/ Gay O'Neill Western Australia ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris" <cretwop@shaw.ca> To: <ENG-HERTFORDSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, September 03, 2005 1:53 AM Subject: Re: [HRT] One Name Study - Question on how to do one? > Sandra - could you advise what kind of structure you use for your Excel > sheet? Theresa - I have undertaken a one-name-study of Powters. It is a great way to make connections with people all over the world! My task is relatively easy in that Powter is not widely common - mostly England, Australia and North America with a few outliers (South Africa, Argentina, some Europe). I started with the IGI records, went to other government sources (e.g., BMD sites) and then added census info. Some cautions (applicable to all genealogy work I suppose): * many of the early first names are common and there aren't many middle names so distinguishing people is difficult - your database grows even though many of the entries may in reality be the same people * one-name-study GEDCOMS are harder to work with, especially if you are a visual person, because lots of entries are not linked * it could get very expensive and time consuming if you want to do more than rely on web-based records Advice - put your study up on the web, on as many sites as you can, to get exposure to lots of people who may contact you with more info! Be prepared to have some ask why you are collecting info that isn't directly related to your own tree! So far I have managed to add only one person to my own tree from my one-name-study but I keep hoping!
