Hello William, Just wondering if any of your BATES came from the Abbots Langley or Watford a little to the south west of Willian but still in Hertford. My great grandfather Benjamin BATES was born c1815 in, we believe,Abbots Langley where his father reportedly was a publican. In 1837 Benjamin married Sarah NOLES/NOWLES/KNOWLES in the parish church Rickmansworth. By coincidence Sarah's sister married a FIELD. (Sarah's name is spelt NOLES on the Church Register for her marriage to Benjamin, Nowles on the birth certificates for those children for whom I have birth certificates and KNOWLES on her death certificate. Although undocumented, I believe Benjamin's parents were Thomas BATES and Mary and that Thomas' father was JOHN, another coincidence??. Would like to hear your thoughts on this. Peter S BATES.
