    1. Problems Searching 1891 Herts Census

    3. I'd welcome advice on difficulties I'm experiencing with searching the 1891 Herts census. I have access to the census via Ancestry (which for the most part has been well worth the subscription). However, I am finding that I cannot locate some of my Herts ancestors using the Ancestry search menu even though they were enumerated on the full census and can be found if you trawl through all the listings for the village/town where they lived. This is OK (if somewhat time consuming) for those ancestors for whom I have an idea of where they were living in 1891. However there are others whom I'm sure would have been in Herts in 1891, but as to exactly where I'm unsure! Has anyone else experienced this problem? Are there other online sources where I could go to search the 1891 census? Thanks Jennie Kennerley Researching in Herts: BUSHELL, KETTLE, PERRY, SKEGGS, TIPLER, WARD

    3. Hi Jennie, This is almost certainly a transcription problem. I have had similar problems but have always managed to locate the family concerned with a little imagination. Did you realise you can search with just a first name? I have used this tack a few times. Pick the most unusual of the family's first names, add a year of birth plus or minus a couple of years, and either a place of residence, or a county of birth. Do not include a place of birth (In my experience, this is the most likeley thing to be mis-transcribed after the surname) Sometimes this method generates several hundred results, but they do occur in alphabetical order, so its relatively easy to scan down the list looking foe possible mis-transcription of the surname. Hope this helps Sandra Jennie & Brent Kennerley wrote: >I'd welcome advice on difficulties I'm experiencing with searching the 1891 >Herts census. > >I have access to the census via Ancestry (which for the most part has been >well worth the subscription).
