Are there other online sources > where I could go to search the 1891 census? I've had exactly the same problem, not only with Herts but with other counties as well. Most of it seems to be down to the people indexing the Census now reading the surname correctly. I'm told (don't know if it's true) that much of the work was done in India. This means that if a surname is unclear, where English people could make an 'educated guess' based on knowledge of English names, the folk in India didn't have a hope of getting it right. When I've eventually found my ancestors by, in some cases, just entering first or last names and ages etc I've found them hard to read as well and I know what I'm looking for! Having said that, there have been others that have been plain to see but have been given ridiculous transcriptions. I'm afraid it's just a case of trial and error. Despite these problems I've found the subscription well worth the money and it has unlocked many of my family problem areas. Dot. in Salisbury
