    1. NEW LISTER with a problem!
    2. Hi List, As I am new to the list I apologise in advance for giving you my problem!! I have a William George Hobden marrying in 1918,Hitchin,to an Evelyn Gertrude May Robinson. They both give their ages as 22 which would mean birth dates of around 1896. Evelyn I have found as she was born in Harwich,William - nothing! I can't find him on the 1901 census, nor his father, also William George, cowman.I have searched the 1837 registers, but he's not there! He did serve with the 10th batallion,Queens regiment for which he was awarded two medals, but his records have not survived!! Their daughter Patricia was born in Hitchin in March 1920,but within five years Evelyn had married again - in Essex! I haven't yet found any record of William Georges death! I have so many questions! They married at the registry office,so would the office hold records of marriage applications? Why,when Evelyn was an Essex girl, did she marry in Hitchin? Are there any electoral rolls,or other books, that can be viewed to determine wether the Hobden family lived in or near Hitchin around the time of this marriage? I am so sorry to ask so many questions but William George is now taking over my every day thinking!! Any help or advice as to what to do next would really be appreciated. Thanks very much, Lou

Hi Lou This one might be completely wrong but it's the closest I can get. I wondered if William George was known by his second name. So many of my relations were at that time. I've come across this family. His father isn't a cowman but at least he's a William. If William George was 22 in 1918 he should be 2 or 3 in 1901. 1901 Census Rotherfield, Sussex (Parish of Crowborough) ?Victoria Road William Hobden; Head; 27; Bricklayer; b. Mayfield, Sussex Phoebe Hobden; Wife; 26; b. Mayfield, Sussex George Hobden; Son; 2; b. Rotherfield, Sussex Edith Hobden; Dau; 4M; b. Rotherfield, Sussex Dot
