There may have been many unmarried or single mothers at that time due to the slaughter in France. We have at least two instances of ancestors who "died in the war" and we have found that one of them did not. My great aunt had a baby about that time; I think it was one of the reasons that they moved from Suffolk. Others may have sent the girl off to a relative with a covering story about her 'husband' for the 'aunt' or whatever relative to tell her neighbours. Also check the various websites on workhouses, they should be able to inform you of the nearest one and whether it was still functioning then. Philip Maddocks
