On the Allen Index I have a couple of marriages from the Hitchin Union Registers. Does this mean that inmates at the workhouse could be married there? The marriages are in 1849 and 1869. If this is the case are the workhouse records showing when people entered and left available? In one case, John PITTS marrying Sarah LOW, I am particularly interested as they had been refused a marriage certificate earlier as Sarah was the half-sister to John's first wife. Adrian
Hi Adrian, I do not think all the marriages registered at Hitchin Union are all inmates, HALs have them on film of the Barnet Guardians ,I have an ancestor who's married was registered there in 1860, and in the 1861 census he was a Builder employing 2 men the marriage was also solemnized at the Parish Church of Hitchin, most of the marriages are solemnized at different Parish Churches. The format of the Marriage Cert is different than the norm, although after 1837 no Fathers are named and the time they have resided in the Parish is recorded, some say more than a Month also no witnesses are named. Perhaps someone knows why they were recorded at Hitchin Union and not at the normal Registery Office Derick ----- Original Message ----- From: "Adrian Pitts" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, June 29, 2008 8:42 PM Subject: [HRT] Hitchin Union Registers > On the Allen Index I have a couple of marriages from the Hitchin Union > Registers.
