Anything about Samuel and Sarah's > ancestry also much appreciated > > Any theories why Sarah moved 55km would be intriguing too!> There was usually a very simple reason why people moved relatively long distances in those days - and 55km or about 35 miles isn't a lot - and that was to seek work. What were called hiring fairs were held in major towns, at which farm workers and domestic servants offered their services to would-be employers. A vast number of young women were in domestic service in large houses. If Sarah was one such and she went to a hiring fair, say, 10 miles from where she lived and was hired by an employer who lived 25 miles in the other direction, then there is your possible answer. If you've ever seen the film of Thomas Hardy's novel, Far From the Madding Crowd, there is a scene of a typical hiring fair in that in which men are lined up and offering their services as shepherds and ag labs. This accounted for a good deal of movement in the 18th and 19th centuries. -- Roy Stockdill Professional genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." To: [email protected] Message-ID: <[email protected]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Hi listers, I've received a marriage certificate that's created more questions than answers. I'm not sure what my next step should be. On 3 October 1881, Aaron Hale (26) married Alice Higgins (25) at St Thomas' Church in the parish of Stepney? (looks more like Steponly but was that a parish?) in Middlesex (reg district Mile End). Their address is London St, with the groom at #6 and the bride at #7. Alice's father is shown as Lynwood Higgins (deceased) - builder. Searches for this name turn up nothing. I've also tried searching for Alice under her maiden name but have the opposite problem - plenty of 'em all over England but which one is mine? I have Aaron and Alice in the 1901 census showing Alice's birthplace as Wormley, Herts. Her age is 44, so if she lied about her age on the marriage cert she kept it up 20 years later! So there we have it - at last I have Alice's maiden name but no birth, no sign of her before her marriage and no sign of her father either. I'd be very grateful for any strategy suggestions. Cheers, Lisa PS I'm posting to both the MDX and Herts lists - apologies to those who are receiving it twice! ------------------------------ Message: 5 Date: Fri, 2 May 2008 18:47:44 +1200 From: "Helen and Brent" <[email protected]> Subject: [HRT] Hertfordshire Parish names To: <[email protected]> Message-ID: <[email protected]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" I live in New Zeland and have no knowledge of what parishes are located in the Hertfordshire area. I have a CD which contains the "Pallot" Marriages. It contains details of many marriages, but all are 'by parish'. Does any one have a list, could provide me with a list (or could direct me to a list - internet preferred) that would help me identify which 'surnames' I should focus upon. (I am interested only - at this stage - in the WREN surname, in Hertfordshire, mostly Ware, Thundridge, Hunsdon, Stanstead Abbots) I have yet to look at a similar CD for Baptisms and I am thinking the same format may apply. Any help from the 'locals' would be really, really, welcome.
