    3. Hi Lisa, I think I've solved your problem - anything rather than get on with the decorating!! I think Alice was illegitimate. When asked her father's name she answered LINWOOD but this I believe was his surname. In 1901 Alice says she was born in Wormley. Couldn't find her in 1891 but in 1881 there is an Alice HIGGINS 23, living with her grandfather Robert on High Road Wormley born London . On the same road possibly opposite is Aaron HALE. In 1871 she is again with her gf. No sign in 1861 but in 1851 Robert HIGGINS family includes a daughter Emma. A look on the IGI shows a baptism of an Alice to an Emma in Wormley in 1868 - a late baptism - register should be checked. A marriage takes place in Sep Q 1858 in W London between Emma HIGGINS & William Henry LINWOOD & lo & behold we find in 1861 living in Edmonton, William H LINWOOD, wife Emma & daughters Alice 3 & Henrietta 1. There is a death of an Emma in Ware Dist. in 1862 - can't find one for William but can't see him in the census either. As Alice is with her gf in 1871 & Henrietta is at a school in London (wrong age?) it seems likely that both parents are deceased. Hope this helps. 1. Re: [HRT] The mysterious Lynwood Higgins - help!
    2. Very impressive! Thank you! I couldn't find a death for William Linwood either but I did find him alive and well in 1891, still in Wormley but with a new wife. A fib on Alice's part, perhaps, made easier by marrying outside of their home county. It's possible that Alice's family weren't thrilled about her choice of husband - by the time the couple married in 1881 two of Aaron's brothers had extensive criminal records. Thanks to everyone who responded. I've learnt a lot from this, not only about the history of my ancestors but also some different approaches to solving a mystery that will surely be useful in my research. What a clever bunch you are!
