I have just subscribed to this list in the hope that someone can throw light on a long-standing problem I have had. I have a birth certificate for Harriet FAULKNER (b. 1874 Marylebone) which shows her parents to have been William FAULKNER (deceased) and Charlotte FAULKNER formerly VIPERS. I am interested in Harriet's brother William FAULKNER junior, b. abt 1862 in Chelsea according to census entries. I am presuming his mother was also Charlotte VIPERS but can find no proof. The 1881 census shows Charlotte FAULKNER as a widow living at 8 Little Church Street Marylebone with her children as follows: 1881 census Street address: 8 Little Church St Civil Parish: St Marylebone Registration district: Marylebone Sub-registration district: Christchurch Charlotte Faulkner Head Wid 45 plain needleworker b. Hertfordshire (abt 1836) William Faulkner son U 19 Shunter on railway b. Chelsea, Middlesex (abt 1862) Frederick Faulkner son U 16 Van Guard G W R b. Marylebone (abt 1865) Annie Faulkner dau U 12 scholar b. Marylebone (abt 1865) Harriet Faulkner dau U 7 scholar b. Marylebone (abt 1865) Source Citation: Class: RG11; Piece: 154; Folio: 27; Page: 45; Line: ; GSU roll: 1341034. I have been unable to follow this family back before this and I wonder if anyone can tell me if a record of the marriage between Charlotte VIPERS and William FAULKNER is recorded in Hertfordshire. I suspect it is more likely to be in the Middlesex area but have no idea where to start searching. Nothing on Free BMD looks right. I have discovered that the VIPERS surname is almost completely restricted to the Hertford area in 1881 which is interesting and seems to fit the census information. An suggestions gratefully received. Chris
Hi Chris You will also find spellings PHYPERS, PHYPURS and PHYPOURS (there's some in my wife's family, her family all being from north-east Hertfordshire) so it may be worth searching for those too. It's not a particularly common name by any accounts. Just out of interest, there was a lad called VIPERS in my form at school (Hoddesdon - late 1970s) and as far as I am aware there are still some PHYPERS living just up the road from me, in Hertford Heath. Hi everyone, I'm new to the list and thought I'd start with the "I should be so lucky" question - Does anyone on the list have knowledge of the Weatherley family in Hatfield? The people I'm most interested in lived there in the late 1800s and early 1900s, however the family line goes back at least to 1800 in the area. Some family members also set up house in Northaw, and there seems to be a connection with Weatherleys in Edmonton/Enfield, Middlesex. I'm also interested in the Hale family who lived in Ware around 1880, one of whom married into the Weatherley family in 1901. Any information would be much appreciated. Lisa
I have been having a very good look and your family is not easily found. However I did find this family in 1871 with similar names of the children and birthdates and in the right order. Except parents different. So I am wondering if Margaret died, then John remarried, then John died all before 1881 census - again not easy to find. 1871 England Census William Faulkner Age: 10 born abt 1861 Relation: Son Father's Name: John Mother's Name: Margaret Where born: Westminster, Middlesex, England Civil Parish: St John Ecclesiastical parish: St John County/Island: London Country: England Registration district: St Olave Southwark Sub-registration district: St John Horsleydown Household Members: Name Age Anna Faulkner 1 Frederick Faulkner 6 John Faulkner 33 Margaret Faulkner 39 Minnie Faulkner 4 William Faulkner 10 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris Gadsby" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, March 15, 2008 8:38 AM Subject: [HRT] VIPERS; FAULKNER >I have just subscribed to this list in the hope that someone can throw >light on a long-standing problem I have had. > > I have a birth certificate for Harriet FAULKNER (b. 1874 Marylebone) which > shows her parents to have been William FAULKNER (deceased) and Charlotte > FAULKNER formerly VIPERS. This is more than likely the family in 1891 1891 England Census Name: William Faulkner Age: 28 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1863 Relation: Son Mother's Name: Charlette Gender: Male Where born: Marylebone, London, England Civil Parish: St Marylebone Ecclesiastical parish: St Matthews County/Island: London England Registration district: Marylebone Sub-registration district: Christchurch Household Members: Name Age Charlette Faulkner 60 Fred Faulkner 25 William Faulkner 28 The frustrating thing for you is that in this census everyone is listed as being born in London including Charlotte.- but it looks as though the enumerator may have just been lazy in what they asked for. Can send you the image off list if you would like it. Gay, Thank you for your suggestions. I have the 1891 census entry tat you show below and I have for some time thought this was the same family but no real proof as I can't find details of Fred FAULKNER to cross check his parentage. They are living in the right area I think. The 1901 entry you quote is certainly the right family. This is the frustration - I can't find the right William FAULKNERs further back. Such a common name unfortunately! I had hoped that the more unfamiliar name of VIPERS would get me better results but so far no luck.
