Mary: I am quite interested in Mary Goodship as that was my Mother's maiden name. However, there are two Goodship families, mine from Paulswalden and yours from Hitchin; possibly both originated from Bedfordshire. Armed with the census details and a probable birth date of 1812 I went to IGI and found the baptism of Mary Goodship at Hitchin St Mary on 9 February 1812. Her parents were George Goodship and Sarah. George Goodship was married three times. The information below was in part courtesy of another family historian (GH). You will notice it does not include Mary but she could be a first child that I had missed. There was another George and Sarah Goodship at St Pauls Walden who are on my side of the family but all points to your Mary being from Hitchin. Anthony George Goodship birth date unknown, census suggests 1790, but baptized with siblings 2 May 1798. He was married three times (GH) (1) Sarah Jackson born Baldock date unknown. George Goodship of Hitchin married Sarah Jackson of Baldock at Hitchin St Mary 14 December 1811; Banns Baldock 1 October 1811(Herts Marriage Index). Probably (GH) she was buried 4 July 1833 aged 46 at Hitchin St Mary (National Burial Index). Daniel Goodship. Baptised 20 December 1813 St Mary, Hitchin, Hertford, England Sarah Goodship. Baptised 24 December 1815 St Mary, Hitchin, Hertford, England. Probably she was buried 1 January 1835 aged 19 at Hitchin St Mary (National Burial Index). George Goodship. Baptised 27 July 1817 St Mary, Hitchin, Hertford, England. George Goodship of Back Lane married Rebecca Monk of Hollow Lane Hitchin St Mary 22 July 1843. See separate sheet. Ann Goodship. Baptised 23 December 1818 St Mary, Hitchin, Hertford, England William Goodship. Baptised 22 December 1820 St Mary, Hitchin, Hertford, England John Goodship. Baptised 4 September 1822 St Mary, Hitchin, Hertford, England. John Goodship married Caroline Bickel in 1847. See separate sheet. Eleanor Goodship born Baldock about 1830. Shown IGI as Ellinor baptized Hitchin 8 January 1830. (2) Hannah Monk née Cousins widow of John Monk. She was born about 1795. The marriage took place at Hitchin in 1834. Hannah probably (GH) was buried 19 November 1845 aged 48 at Hitchin St Mary (National Burial Index). BMD match for death is Mar Q 1846 Hitchin 6 363. John Monk married Hannah Cousins at Hitchin St Mary 5 June 1834 (Herts Marriage Index). George Goodship married Hannah Monk at Hitchin St Mary 12 December 1835 (Herts Marriage Index). (3) Ann Burry or Berry born Munden (Little or Greater?). The marriage took place 1849 in London (GH).
