According to HALS Online Marriage Index (www.hertsdirect.org/ufs/ufsmain?esessionid=7E7CB245122C3DC2363933B41971C8C9_1), John HOOPER of Willian married Susannah GILES of Willian on 11 July 1802 at Willian. You can send off for a copy of the parish register record of the marriage from HALS which may give you a little more information if you are lucky. I can't find a baptism for John on the IGI, but according to the Militia Lists of Willian the only HOOPER recorded is a Benjamin HOOPER, Carpenter, for the year 1785 - perhaps a relation?? There is also an Apprenticeship record on HALS Index for this same Benjamin HOOPER, of Hitchin, dated 1 May 1775, father William HOOPER, apprenticed to William CORNELL, Carpenter & Joiner, of Hitchin. This Benjamin HOOPER was baptised at St Mary Hitchin on 20 August 1760, parents William & Susannah. William & Susannah had several other children according to extracted records on the IGI, including a brother John baptised on 13 August 1773, so could this perhaps be your John given that ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 years in the 1841 census. The other possibility is that your John may be the son of Benjamin, but Benjamin did not marry until 30 September 1782 according to HALS Online Index, so this is probably too late for him to be the father of your John who unfortunately looks as if he may have died before the 1851 census so we cannot obtain a more accurate birth date and place of birth. I also note that John HOOPER jnr shown on the previous page to your John has a son William - perhaps named after his grandfather?? There is a death registration for a John HOOPER in the December qtr 1841 at Hitchin reg district (contains the parish of Willian), vol 6, page 372 according to Ancestry (do check the reference nos for yourself before ordering) which could be your John. There is an extracted baptism on the IGI of a Susanna GILES on 20 September 1778 at Willian, parents John & Susanna. There is a marriage for this couple on HALS Online Marriage Index which will give you Susanna snr's maiden name.
