Hello list, I'm tracking the origins of: Jane WATERS, b. 18 April 1813, Stevenage, Herts. (GM of my GM) her f. may have been Arnold WATERS m. may have been, Ann nee BLOWS Jane marr. William HIGGS, 4 June 1838, Nash parish, MON (the record notes that he was unable to speak a word at his wedding -- but he was pronounced married, anyway.) Jane d. Oct Q, 1898, Strand 1b 387 photo, with her dau. & G-dau. from approx. 1896 extant, I cannot determine if this WATERS family was from Herts, or not. If the Arnold & Ann are correct parents, and their marr. was in Shoreditch in 1809 (IGI) what were they doing in London? But, the IGI gives 4 possibles for Ann's bap. in years 1788-1792 in Stevenage, Herts. And there's a possible in Tottenham, London in these years. And, then, how does Jane end up in rural Monmouthshire in 1838, marrying a person -- Wm HIGGS -- whose parents seem to have originated in Methyr Tydfil (even though their names were not Welsh -- HIGGS and BRIGHT.) Are there any descriptions of Stevenage as it was ca. 1813? Was transport to London available by canal at that date or was it only coach? Any clues or suggestions would be welcome. Thanks Mike EJ in California
As you have the marriage from IGI you might like to examine the marriage register now online at Ancestry. It will not answer your questions although Arnold signed his name (not bad for 1809) while Ann made her mark. It might be worth noticing that the witnesses were Michael Batt and Terence O'Brien, not Waters or Blows, but do not make too much of that.
