Hello Kath, >From the Cambs FHS Parish Register Transcripts of Guilden Morden: 20 May 1802 John EAST, bachelor, of the parish married Elizabeth TITMOUSE, spinster, of the parish. Both made their mark. Witnesses: Joseph PEARCE & John HALL Baptisms: 30 April 1780 Elizabeth TITMOSS dau Abel & Sarah TITMOSS 7 March 1803 John EAST son John & Elizabeth EAST 26 February 1805 Edith EAST dau John & Elizabeth EAST 26 August 1807 Sarah EAST dau John & Elizabeth EAST Burials: 23 February 1785 Abel TITMOSS, pauper 15 December 1801 Sarah TITMOUSE, widow 23 July 1803 John EAST son John & Elizabeth John & Elizabeth seem to disappear from Guilden Morden after 1807. They look as if they may reappear in Steeple Morden from 1813: Baptisms: 23 May 1813 Eliza EAST dau John & Elizabeth EAST, Labourer 14 July 1816 John EAST son John & Elizabeth EAST, Labourer 25 April 1824 Elizabeth EAST son John & Elizabeth EAST, Labourer Burials: 13 October 1814 Edith EAST, aged 34 10 December 1818 Editha EAST, aged 74 20 February 1819 John EAST, aged 73 19 January 1827 Sarah EAST, aged 19 (looks like the Sarah bap at Guilden Morden) 29 January 1828 John EAST, aged 45 The only James EAST on the Cambridgeshire Baptismal Index baptised between 1807 & 1813 is one in Gamlingay in 1811 and according to the IGI his parents are Humphrey & Ann so that probably knocks him out. Looking at the marriages of John & Elizabeth's children at Steeple Morden, Edith EAST married Thomas HORSLEY on 27 March 1828, the witnesses being John NEWELL & Mary Ann EAST - could this be a sibling of Ediths and if so where was she born/baptised. Ah, this looks like a second marriage for Elizabeth nee TITMOUSE - 10 November 1829 John SOAL, bachelor, otp married Elizabeth EAST, widow, otp. Witnesses William DAY & Ann DELLER. And a further EAST marriage on 31 December 1829 of John NEWELL, bachelor, otp & Mary Ann EAST, spinster, otp. Witnesses Eliza EAST & William DAY all of which points to Mary Ann perhaps being another daughter of John & Elizabeth. This looks like Elizabeth SOLE in the 1841 census of Steeple Morden: HO107/63/22, folio 6, page 6 Wm EAST 20 Labourer Elizabeth SOLE 60 Nurse Elizabeth EAST 15 So there appear to be two unaccounted for EASTs that appear to be connected in some way to John & Elizabeth EAST - the William above who states in the 1851 census of Steeple Morden that he was born there c1821 but there is no baptism for him in the transcript and Mary Ann EAST who married John NEWELL in 1829. William EAST is definitely the son of John & Elizabeth - his marriage at Steeple Morden on 6 April 1845 to Eliza LEE states that to be the case. Unfortunately, Mary Ann NEWELL is buried at Steeple Morden on 2 September 1832, aged 22 which puts her birth as c1810 but still gives us no further idea of where she was born/baptised. John SOAL was buried on 31 October 1835, aged 46 and a burial for Elizabeth SOAL on 6 February 1859, aged 83 which fits in pretty well with the baptismal date of Elizabeth TITMOUSE. The other county to consider when looking for the birth/baptisms of the missing EASTs is Bedfordshire. Hertfordshire baptisms on the IGI are pretty complete. Mary Ann EAST's baptism does not appear on the Cambs Baptismal Index nor is there one for William EAST. I'm not sure this will have helped you much at all, but will probably give you a little more background info. Have you found any immigration records for your James and have you found any marriage records?? Mind you, I don't know if Tasmanian records at that time give any more information than our English ones. Any clues with the names of his children - Edith seems a popular one with the children of John & Elizabeth over here?? Sorry not to be of more help. Janet > > I'm new to the list and I'm an East researcher from Australia. I have been > trying for several years to find some info on my 3xgreat grandfather James > East born circa 1809 in the UK. He arrived in Tasmania as a free settler > about 1827, as far as I know he was on his own, no other family members > with him. I have not been able to find a birth for my James. > > I tried a different approach a few days ago, he had named his first > daughter Ann Titmouse East, which I had always thought was a strange name > to give a child. So I searched Titmouse marriages and found an Elizabeth > Titmouse had married a John East (b circa 1775) on 20 May 1802 in GUILDEN > MORDEN, CAMBRIDGESHIRE, ENGLAND. So I am thinking that this could very > well be a connection to my James East. Does anyone out there have any > connection or info about this family?
