First of all backup your data to CDs or to USB pen drive - as soon as possible! Your old version of FTW will allow you to save your files in the GEDCOM format which almost any genealogical software will open There are numerous genealogical software titles on the market including good free ones- which one you use is a personal preference some people swear by one or the other I am still using FTW Version 11 (2003) on my PC which is running Windows 7 Home Premium it has also worked on Windows XP and Windows Vista Newer versions of FTW will normally open older FTW files (but not vice versa) Amazon.co.uk has FTW 2010 on special offer at present Regards Martin -----Original Message----- From: eng-hertfordshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-hertfordshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of geniebugged Sent: 30 December 2009 10:04 PM To: eng-hertfordshire@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [HRT] New software - FTM 2010 Still using older version FTM - BUT burned all onto CDs and onto a Flash drive - for backups - which was a very savvy move after my Laptop gave out - Some files end up read only - just open - do a 'save as' [back onto desktop] and add a number in front of the file name - This activates the open file again - I use - 09-Hyde-O'Neill - Thumb- Flash-drives - Kingston* 4GB - USP 2.0 5 yr warranty rec'd for Windows Vista - May be able to get Amazon - which U have over there also as far as I can tell - these were $10 USD ©1994-2009 Mimi Taylor Generation Gap Specialist™ for HALL-PRATT-TAYLOR + PIERCE "From Pierce-Arrows 2 Straight Arrows"© -----Original Message----- From: eng-hertfordshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-hertfordshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of ron howard Sent: Wednesday, December 30, 2009 2:50 PM To: ENG-HERTFORDSHIRE@rootsweb.com Subject: [HRT] New software - FTM 2010 Can you help? I need to buy some new software for my tree, currently using a very old FTM programme. My files are stored on an unreliable and slow pc, which I wish to transfer to my 'Windows Vista laptop pc'. Has anyone got advice or tips on the FTM 2010 programme or how to transfer files? I've looked at the Ancestry Site but am still confused. I am a real novice, but have over 2000 entries in my tree. Note: My tree is mostly in Hemel Hempstead Thanks, Ron Ron Howard Hertfordshire Surnames List http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~hughw/hertford.html ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ENG-HERTFORDSHIRE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter.
