Thomas Charles Barnard, a watchmaker of London was born 1819 Great Hormead and arrived with his wife Maria and five surviving children to Christchurch, New Zealand in 1856. Sister Maria Barnard b 1817 Little Hadham, Hertford (she had previously mar to John Campbell 1839 ) travelled under her maiden name to New Zealand in 1858 where she married Robert Armitage.
