>From True Briton ( 1793 ) ( London, England ), Thursday, March 9, 1797; Issue 1312. HERTFORD ASSIZES. Before Baron HOTHAM and Judge HEATH. On Monday the Assizes commenced at this place, when William SMITH alias GYPSY TOM, was brought up for trial, he standing indicted with having, in the month of November last, stolen a deal box, containing 136 pieces of muslin, of the value of two hundred and twelve pounds, the property of Messrs. JACKSON and POTTS, of the City. >From the evidence adduced by several witnesses who were examined, it appeared, that the box containing the muslin had been put into the Newcastle waggon, and directed to a Correspondent in the Country, when on the road, some means were used to get it out and carry it off at Hatfield Woodside. Information being immediately given at the Public Ofice in Bow-street, REVETT and FUGION, two Officers, pursued the Prisoner to Peterborough, where they found him at a public house in bed; he made some resistance, but was soon secured. On his being searched, a key was found on him, which opened a box he had with him in the room, and which was found to contain twenty-five of the pieces of muslin, all of them with the marks, and which being produced in Court, were sworn to by Messrs. JACKSON; in consequence of which the Jury found the Prisoner "Guilty" - He received sentence of Transportation for seven years. Benjamin RANDALL was convicted of feloniously carrying away a quantity of bed furniture, the property of Elizabeth DARBY - Guilty - seven years Transportation.
