    3. Hi , there is a Chapel Foot in Offley which is , I understand , between Hitchin and Luton . and the ATS had a detachment at " Chapel Foot along London Road " . and as he has given Hitchen . There is also an Arlesey , which might be pronounced Alsey which might in turn translate into Aucey or Ancey .........Arlesey is north of Hitchin . You need first though the marriage of Wm to Harriet ? in presumably Waltham Abbey , as she is born there , c 1822-1829. There is a www.walthamabbeygenealogy.co.uk which seems active and it might be worth asking them if they have access to the marriage and banns of that period and see if there is a marriage for Wm and Harriet there. Other than that you may have to spend a lot of time in Herts RO going through bapt registers for the parishes around Hitchin covering 1795-1805 for Wm`s birth . life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=/// ----- Original Message ----- From: "Simon Harding" <simon@greynose.net> To: <ENG-HERTFORDSHIRE@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, April 12, 2010 11:36 PM Subject: [HRT] WEBSTER, PALLETT >I am trying to find out about William Webster born 1799 somewhere around > Stevenage or Hitchin. 3. Elizabeth Thanks for your help. I think you are talking about the same Chapel Foot I located. If you look at a map of Offley, you will see that about 3 miles to the east of the parish is London Road, nowadays the B656 from Hitchin to Codicote and Welwyn. Chapelfoot is marked on the OS map, it is about half a mile to the north of the junction with the B651 to St. Pauls Walden and is known to passers by for the Royal Oak PH. Thanks to some handy information from one or two other people I have now been able to find quite a bit more from the IGI and also the Herts. archive services (HALS). Basically, my William Webster was the son of Isaac Webster. It looks like Isaac came from Luton but married at Ickleford (a couple of miles north of Hitchin) in 1797. William and three other children were baptised together in Hitchin in 1807. Some time after that they moved to Datchworth where the family farmed up until the 1880s or later. The eldest son William went to Waltham Abbey as per my original post. I note that Arlesey is the next village on from Ickleford so you may have something there too. I think I need to see the parish registers next.
