In 1839, Thomas DIMSDALE, Esq., was Secretary to a Rural Police Force maintained at Barnet by voluntary subscription. At this time there was no centralised force and any protection was maintained by local, private forces. From his evidence given to a Royal Commission in that year, it appears that DIMSDALE was very well respected and effectively controlled the entire policing of the area
