    3. I've recently discovered a cousin, once removed, and would like to know more about him and, if he had one, his family. He was born in Sunderland, Co. Durham, but lived in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire. I found his death registration which give me the first name of his wife, and I've found a marriage which could be his. I'd like to get a copy of the marriage registration, but the Watford registrar's office requires full information (which I don't have) about the marriage before they will produce it, and I'd prefer not to buy it from the GRO as I'd like to see original signatures. If all else fails, though, I will get it from the GRO. If anyone can offer me help or advice to find the marriage information in some other way, and/or to locate my cousin's children, if he had any, or his wife or wives, I'd be very grateful. Here's what I know: James Ormston Bell b. 8 February 1907, Sunderland, Co. Durham Father: James Ormston Bell Mother: Harriett Adams d. 26 October 1984, in the Shrodells Wing of the General Hospital in Watford Death registered at Watford Registrar's office Address at time of death: 56A Talbot Rd., Rickmansworth Occupation on death certificate: pump house attendant Wife at time of death: Geraldine Possible marriage: James O. Bell and Geraldine Beasley Registered by Watford Registrar in 1974 If the above is the marriage of my cousin, it's possible that it would not have been his first marriage. Also, I found a birth for a Geraldine Beasley in 1940, so, if she is the same lady, she is/was, considerably younger than my cousin. On the premise that I had found the correct wife, I located a likely lady on Talbot Rd. (different house number) via Findmypast.com., and have written to her. Alas, I've received no response so perhaps she is no longer there. Hoping for a big flash of light. Vivienne Toronto, Canada

    3. Vivienne, These are the details given on the GRO Index via Ancestry for the marriage you found below: James O BELL & Geraldine BEASLEY married December qtr 1974 at Watford reg district, volume 10, page 0946. Ancestry have incorrectly transcribed Geraldine's page number as 0966 but I have looked at the original and it is definitely 0946 so the names do match. There is also another marriage for a James O BELL in the September qtr 1928 at Ware reg district, vol 3a, page 2205, his spouses name being shown as Edith C REED. Could this be your James's first marriage? There is a child's birth registered in the March qtr 1931 at Ware reg district, vol 3a, page 1202 (Joan O BELL), mother's maiden name REED followed by the birth registration of a Joyce BELL in Sep qtr 1934, Jean I BELL in Sep 1937, both at Ware reg district and both with mother's maiden name of REED. 3. Did you ascertain what the full information needed was? Normally for a marriage, I understand the additional information the registrar needs is the venue of the marriage in order to find their copy of the registration. If this is all it is, that is a slightly different problem. It is only the GRO by compiling their index that brings all this information together for marriages in any registration district. Additionally, if it was at a church, then that gives you another avenue to explore, either at the church itself or the county record office if it has been deposited. And indeed it is this version that will have the original signatures. regards Keith -----Original Message----- From: eng-hertfordshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-hertfordshire-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Vivienne Simmons Sent: 10 January 2010 21:06 To: ENG-HERTFORDSHIRE@rootsweb.com Subject: [HRT] Bell and Beasley I've recently discovered a cousin, once removed, and would like to know more about him and, if he had one, his family. 3. Thank you all very much for your help with my quest. As a start, I've ordered the Bell/Beasley marriage certificate from the GRO, and will contact the G. Bell found in Watford. If things don't fall into place with these two actions, I'll make enquiries about the other James O. Bell marriages found in Hertfordshire. A year ago, finding anything at all about this leg of my family seemed impossible, then James turned up, so I'm very hopeful that this won't be a dead end. Thank you all again. Your help and advice is much appreciated, and I'm glad to know of HALS which I will investigate as suggested. Gratefully, Vivienne Toronto, Canada
