In Hart's Army List for 1846, Ernest Frederick Griffiths had been an Ensign since 8 July 1842 (see also London Gazette) and was to be promoted to Lieutenant on 14 April 1846 (by purchase see London Gazette). In case anyone else has wondered about Edwin's proper rank here is the explanation, also from The London Gazette: Paymaster, with the honorary rank of Major, Edwin Griffiths, retired upon half-pay, late of a Depot Battalion, to have the honorary rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. Dated 26th April, 1864.
