    3. More on Edwin Griffiths movements, from http://www.london-gazette.co.uk Apologies if this duplicates earlier information, but it's becoming quite a long thread! London Gazette Issue 21934, 24 Oct 1856, p3467 Lieutenant Edwin Griffiths, from half-pay as Paymaster of the 96th Foot, to be Paymaster of the British Depots, Chatham, vice Dalgety, deceased. Dated 1st October, 1856. London Gazette Issue 22848, 26 Apr 1864, p2282 Paymaster, with the honorary rank of Major, John Dennis Swinburne, from the 83rd Foot, to be Paymaster, vice Paymaster, with the honorary rank of Major, Edwin Griffiths, who retires upon half-pay. Dated 26th April, 1864. I haven't been able to find anything much on Edwin Arthur Griffiths who d. 1868 in India. His burial is recorded as 27 Apr 1868 at Jhelum according to the LDS beta site and they give his occupation as "Patrol" which I assume is the same as a Patrol Officer. Pind Dadan Khan is in Jhelum district and the Khewra Salt Mine is nearby. It is still there today, the world's second largest apparently. I can't find any marriage or children, although I wouldn't discount that completely as he may have married an Anglo-Indian and the information may not have passed back to England. It would however be in the India Office Records. It would take a visit to the British Library to find out more. They are sure to have staff records for the Salt Revenue Department. Cheers Simon.
