    3. Hi, I tried to find Edwin in the 1861 when it appeared that he was at Chatham , but got nowhere , and then when the Probate was found it said that he had previously been of Cheltenham, a favourite retiring place for officers , and couldn`t find him there either , what on earth could he have been mistranscribed as ??? we know almost to the day when he was somewhere , and he should be in both 1851 and 61 census ... Thanks Simon for the ancestry clue , this is the right one and explains entirely that Margaret MacKensie was b 1802 Bishopsgate, London, m Henry Brooks, 1825, married Edwin Griffiths , Parramatta May 1843 ........it also says that Margaret died in NSW in 1867, and interestingly that the family arrived in NSW three days before Christmas in 1822, on the Admiral Cockburn . Of Margaret and Edwin`s three children , Jane Augusta b 1845 seems to have married someone called Lees, and to have died 1891 . This doesn`t have anything further for George, b 1844 , nor for Georgina Marianne. The Australian owner of the The Norton Tribe is Patrick , on witelite@adam.com.au and the tree was last updated in Dec 2009... the Mackenzies are a very interesting family . There doesn`t however seem to be anything more about the origins of Col Edwin . life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=/// ----- Original Message ----- From: "Anthony M. 3. Complete mystery why none of them are on the 1861 census. I did an address search on the two places mentioned at Probate and they were not there either!!! There is a George Griffiths of right age born Australia (no specifics) about 1844; in the 1871 census he is a retired army officer and in the 1881 census married and an insurance agent. Not enough here to guarantee he is Georgina's twin. Have only scribbled notes but one of these records was Hornsey. Ancestry trees can be full of pitfalls but for what its worth one of them claims Jane Augusta died Maida Vale 13 February 1891 although it does not mention a Lees marriage. 3. Deepest apologies for being dismissive about Lees. Take a gander at the marriage register from St Marylebone (on Ancestry). Jane Augusta Griffiths married William Munning Lees, Major in the Army, on 8 April 1869. Her Father Edwin Griffiths Lt Col, His Father John Campbell Lees Knight. Married by J. L. Roberts, Vicar of Spratton, her brother in law. Among the witnesses were her sister G. M. Roberts and one surmises her brother G. Griffiths. :-) Anthony ________________________________________ From: eng-hertfordshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [eng-hertfordshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of elizabeth howard [elizgh@btinternet.com] Sent: 11 September 2010 17:21 To: eng-hertfordshire@rootsweb.com Subject: [HRT] Baptismal look up please, Griffiths Hi, I tried to find Edwin in the 1861 when it appeared that he was at Chatham , but got nowhere , and then when the Probate was found it said that he had previously been of Cheltenham, a favourite retiring place for officers , and couldn`t find him there either , what on earth could he have been mistranscribed as ??? we know almost to the day when he was somewhere , and he should be in both 1851 and 61 census ...
