IGI has the marriage of Edwin Griffiths to Margaret Brooks on 3 May 1843 at St John, Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia. This was then HQ for the 96th Foot. Therefore it seems likely that the first wife had died. Here is a resume of what I learned: The 96th Foot was responsible for providing detachments to transport convicts to New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). From 1839-49 they served as prison guards. The regimental HQ was at Windsor and Parramatta NSW then from 1843 at Launceston VDL. In 1849 they arrived in Calcutta and were in India until 1854, returning home to the UK before deploying to Gibraltar for garrison service for rather less than a year in 1856-7.
