I couldn't resist and had a look in Rootsweb for your Edwin. I found a woman born Margaret Mackenzie who married a man named Brooks, then her second marriage was in 1843 to Edwin Griffiths in Paramatta! Does that help! See for example: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=monaropioneers&id=I179984 There are several trees in "Worldconnect" that have this marriage. This one identifies him as Paymaster of the 96th: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=mynortontribe&id=I3046 Sorry I have run out of time but it looks like it may be worth a closer look. You should be able to contact the author of that tree (an Australian) to find out more. Cheers Simon. Good stuff as Brooks = McKenzie and marriage Paramatta 1843 fits better with the births at Launceston in 1844; we know, too, that the 96th moved between these two locations. I think we now may discount Margaret Johnson and tidy things up.
