    3. Here are the names of chief constables in Herts for around 1839. This was before we had the county constabulary so they supervised several parish constables in their district. They were probably unpaid but I get the feeling that they were probably quite well off. There are some unusual names here so, if anyone would like any further info, contact me. Otherwise, if you have anything to share, I'd be grateful to hear it. Thomas Bell, Cheshunt area, Francis Machon Gt Amwell area William Sharp jnr stanstead area George Rust Buckland area William Holyoak Rust Gt Hadham area Benjamin Christy Ashwell area - believed farmer of 350 acres Thomas Pennyfeather welwyn area Henry Pallet Bennington area - there was also a Pallett as overseer of the poor in Essendon around the same time but I don't know if there was any connection George Oliver Knebworth area Micheal Chapman Hitchin area James Oakley Offley area Thomas Seear Hemel Hempstead area John Isaac House Wheathampstead area. who may have lived at Grove Farm Wheathampstead. 3. I took a look at John Isaac House. He died in 1849 (buried at Wheathampstead) and his widow Ann is found 1851 in Paddington with her daughter Ann who was blind (seeking treatment in nearby Harley Street?). One wonders if the job as chief constable was passed on to Thomas House, the son who took over Grove Farm (1851 census), or his other son John (John Isaac in parish baptisms) who was a farmer and brewer in Harpenden (1841 and 1851 census). With your interest in pubs it is noteworthy that members of the House family were publicans in Wheathampstead, too. Probably they included the Isaac House who was father of John Isaac the elder. Keep up the good work. 3. I noticed that the Militia Lists for men who served 1761-2 mention three Chief Constables in Dacorum Hundred: Thomas Hallam, William Franklin and Thomas Lake. A list of parishes follows each name.
