Hi, the name Thorowgood is found in Norfolk , which is also an early migrant county , I forget which Thorowgood emigrated from Grimston in Norfolk but I think he was a short lived emigrant and died in Jamestown ....around the Civil War ( 1640-1660) . In the Documentsonline which includes PCC wills 1358- 1858, there are some early Ashbys , Thomas Ashbie or Ashby , gentleman , of Quenby , Leics , will dated 1639 is one that springs out .........you can download this for £3.50 . another is Thomas Ashby , gentleman of Albury , Herts, will dated1687, Thomas Ashby, gentleman of Hertford, will dated 1722 . Other Ashby wills include Shukbrugh Ashby of Quenby , 1792. Elizabeth Ashby, widow , of Quenby , dated 1682 , and George Ashby, of Quenby , 1728 and Hannah , widow , Quenby , 1732 . I cannot imagine that the SC Ashby conjured the name Quenby out of thin air , so he must have been of Quenby or related to the Ashbys of Quenby . Google reveals Quenby Hall , in the parish of Hungarton, and says it was built by George Ashby in 1627. Genuki Leicestershire shows that " The Ashby family lived in the manor hall for 700 years " until William Ashby in 1849 life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=/// ----- Original Message ----- From: "sue" <sueashby@earthlink.net> To: <ENG-HERTFORDSHIRE@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 09, 2010 4:22 PM Subject: [HRT] Ashby Surname > Hello List, > > I'm posting to this list because, 'supposedly' my husband's Ashby line > came from Hertfordshire.. > I maintain the ASHBY-L (list) at rootsweb and we have a few folks who > have done the DNA test but, don't believe we have anyone from the UK > that has tested. > > The first known/proven Ashby ancestor in the U.S. (for many of us) is > the Thomas Ashby (1680-1752) in VA who may have been born in England. > he may have been from Ashby de la Zouche and there is a John Ashby whose > immigration from the U.K. was to South Carolina.
