At this time there was no centralised force and any protection was maintained by local, private forces. Have you found the HALS online surname index ? it includes the Allen marriage index and probably one of the best resources available for accurate real information on Herts families . He obviously had connections with the three counties because he married Ann Cox (from Haynes) in Luton and 9 of their 10 children were born in Tring, and one in Berkhamstead. Their names were Eliza, Emma, Charlotte, Sarah Matilda, Jane, Walter, Henry Copeland, Ernest Joseph, Herbert William and Agnes. Do you recognise any of these names?
