    2. Elaine Saunders
    3. In 1839, Thomas DIMSDALE, Esq., was Secretary to a Rural Police Force maintained at Barnet by voluntary subscription. At this time there was no centralised force and any protection was maintained by local, private forces. From his evidence given to a Royal Commission in that year, it appears that DIMSDALE was very well respected and effectively controlled the entire policing of the area

Have you found the HALS online surname index ? it includes the Allen marriage index and probably one of the best resources available for accurate real information on Herts families . Just google HALS and you will get to the Herts site ......and hidden almost in the top right corner is a tiny box of tricks, click on the Herts names online bit . 3. Hello Josie, I cannot help you with your specific question but I too am tracing the Crawley line and you may be able to help me. My earliest Crawley was James, born 1815 in Stepney, London. He obviously had connections with the three counties because he married Ann Cox (from Haynes) in Luton and 9 of their 10 children were born in Tring, and one in Berkhamstead. Their names were Eliza, Emma, Charlotte, Sarah Matilda, Jane, Walter, Henry Copeland, Ernest Joseph, Herbert William and Agnes. Do you recognise any of these names? Have you read Mr. Elliott’s evidence —Yes, I have, and I perfectly concur in it as a statement of the general condition of the roads and of the feeling of insecurity of travellers in travelling after dark. I was shot at some time ago near Harpenden; the shot missed me, but the report of the pistol started the horse which I had, which was a blood horse; it galloped away and I did not attempt to stop it.
