    3. This is absolutly fascinating, John. The compiler lists many of my family members when he gets back to the C18th although he's descended from one of the brothers of my ancestor. Rather disturbingly though he has a different wife to the father! I have only had a quick look and will study it further. Thank you very much for bringing this to my attention. 2. Estelle Daniels
    3. Thank you Michael & Elizabeth for your replies. Im sorry I should have mentioned that Wallingford was in Berks/Oxfordshire not in Herts seeing I was on the Herts list. I guess I was hoping that someone may have known the parentage of Matilda BROWN, or William YEOMANs and they might have had an ABSOLON mother and thus form a link. I know I am thinking way out here, but maybe worth a try. Without knowing parents it is really difficult to identify which, or any of the John ABSOLON/Ms born towards the end of the 1700s in Wallingford might be mine. Several people have checked Wallingford PRs for me, and the John's that are there seem to be accounted for with other brides and families. Census ages concur he was born in 1798, except for the 1871 census which at age 74 calculates to him being born 1797. John was a Baker, but I have no idea where, or who with, he did his trade - maybe it was in Herts seeing he married Susan there. He certainly doesnt appear on the Apprentices list on the HALS website. Maybe Susan had been working in Wallingford or Clerkenwell. The couple certainly werent living in Herts in c1824 when their first known child, Eliza Amelia, was born in St Pancras. John may have simply been born in Wallingford and his family could actually have been living in Herts or anywhere for that matter when, and if he was baptised. Henry was buried in Bunhill Fields cemetery in 1846, the death being registered in Shoreditch. The couple named their sons that I know of Henry Jonathon; William; John (Jack) and George Richard (Dick). I suspect Jonathon is after Susan's father Jonathon STONE of Herts. Perhaps someone may know of a particular naming order used in Herts area that may give me a clue to John's father's name. There are no other clues on the Marriage entry as to John's parentage. It seems from census records that all the known children were born in St James Clerkenwell parish. If anyone has any Herts, probably St Mary's Rickmansworth parish baptism registers c1821-22, I would appreciate a check for any earlier children of John and Susan/nah that may have been born in Herts that might have not survived. I have written all that I know in the hope that someone may be able to point me in another direction with clues that I already have. Thank you in anticipation for any further advice, Estelle (in rural Australia) > Date: Tue, 2 Feb 2010 12:46:51 +0100 > From: michael@walsby.eu > To: eng-hertfordshire@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [HRT] BROWN & YEOMAN 1821 Marriage witnesses > > Just to mention that Wallingford is now in Oxfordshire, and in any deep > research you may have to contact both counties' record offices and > Rootsweb lists. 3. Hi Glyn Names were spelt differently according to location, occupation (degree of literacy?) and the "ear" of the person hearing the information for example the Minister or Parish Clerk or official at the Reg office. Thus when posting a request give as much detail as possible - people on lists are very happy to help but your posted info is far too vague and doesn't match with sites I have checked. Also consider the social times of the dates you have listed - WW1 for a marriage and post war for a death? Has 57 been mistransribed ? Maybe 37? The answer is often in the detaiil of certs - the witnesses or the informant or the vilage orstreet address etc. Happy hunting Marlene ----- Original Message ----- From: "G Morris" <gr.morris@btinternet.com> To: <eng-hertfordshire@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 03, 2010 1:55 AM Subject: Re: [HRT] James JOHNSTON > Hello Elizabeth, > > I believe the surnames are interchangeable. 3. Found in an 1839 report on policing, Edward LEWIS was one of the Poor Law Guardians for Bayford. Crime was so bad in the area (before proper policing) that the local residents subscribed to hire a private policeman and applied to the Metropolitan police for one of their officers to be sent down. Richard HALL of Totteridge also gave evidence to the parliamentary committee. He'd be living in the area for 21 years i.e. since 1818. He also owned land at Codicote near Welwyn. Francis SAPTE was credited with bringing proper policing to Codicote by persuading an officer from the Metropolitan police to move to the village which resulted in the break-up of a marauding gang of criminals. 3. Hello Listers, I have the above two people as witnesses on the Marriage Register entry of my great great grandparents John and Susan ABSOLON (nee STONE) who married in St Mary's Rickmansworth on 26 September, 1821. If anyone is familiar with St Mary's Rickmansworth parish marriage registers, I would be pleased to know if these two happened to be people who conveniently witnessed many marriages in the local parish church, or that they are likely to be friends or family of the couple? I am at a loss to try and find parents for John ABSOLON who according to later census' was born in Wallingford (as many ABSOLONs were). John was a Baker by trade, and I believe that Susan/nah was a Rickmansworth girl. Many thanks for any help. 3. Just to mention that Wallingford is now in Oxfordshire, and in any deep research you may have to contact both counties' record offices and Rootsweb lists. Having said this, the parish register films and transcripts are available in both record offices.
