My interest is in the HIBBLE brothers, Charles, Alfred & Walter HIBBLE who were born in the 1820's and early 1830's in Middlesex, England. I was quite surprised to find the trio in the 1841 census in Rickmansworth, and from looking at the other people on the census page, it would appear that the boys were at boarding school. NB. The Arthur that is listed is an error and the census should have recorded the correct name of Alfred. The page on which they appear just says town, and the prior page has some of the residents in "Basing house in the town". Is this enough information to determine which school the boys attended? Any information on the school would be of most interest. School records would be incredible!!!!!! There is no known link to this area. Their father, Charles HIBBLE, was for a time, a Licensed Victualler in the Covent Gardens area of Middlesex. 3. Basing House. A large timber framed and rendered house built in the 17th century. The roof is tiled. In circa 1740 the front range was added and again in about 1850 to 1860 the house was remodelled. It was extended in red brick in circa 1885 and again in the early 20th century. The extensions are covered by slate. The two storey house has an attic storey and features two parallel five bay ranges and a central entrance. The 17th century remains of the house are only visible at the rear in form of exposed framing with brick nogging. From 1672 until 1677 Basing House was the home of William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania. Basing House became a school in 1839 and in 1870 the house of Dr Henderson. From 1930 until the early 1990s it housed council offices and in 1992 it became the home of the Three Rivers Museum. One of several hits on a simple Google search. 3. Yet a Benjamin Batchelor is known to have been buried at Aldbury aged 38 on 21 July 1847 (National Burial Index is also free on Findmypast during World Cup matches). Did you check the memorial inscriptions for Aldbury published by Herts FHS? These lists sometimes include graves earlier recorded but since lost. The booklet can be ordered at Genfair (link on FFHS site). It is not far to Little Gaddesdon and the Henry Bachelor who served in the Guards is found there (spelling Batchelor) in census returns up to 1911. Very likely the same body as his destination on discharge was Bucks and he married a girl from that county according to the census. Happy hunting, Anthony. ________________________________________ From: eng-hertfordshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [eng-hertfordshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Nancat3@aol.com [Nancat3@aol.com] Sent: 13 June 2010 12:26 To: eng-hertfordshire@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [HRT] Bachelor family in Aldbury Thank you David, interesting. 3. You're in luck as its raining in Denmark too. St. Lawrence, Wormley: brass of Angelette Tooke and Walter Tooke, her husband, their 8 sons and 4 daughters. The stone and brasses originally formed the top of an altar tomb, but now are on the floor of the chancel. Angelette Tooke was daughter and co-heir of William Woodliffe citizen and mercer of London, to whom the manor and advowson of the church passed in 1541. Her nephew, William Purvey, is buried in the large Renaissance tomb against the south wall of the chancel. The date is about 1590. If you Google "Tooke" and inscriptions you will find a biographical lexicon on Google Books that describes this tombstone further as well as that of Anna Tooke wife of George Tooke and eldest daughter of Thomas Tooke of Beere in East Kent. The Hertfordshire Family and Population History Society have recorded all the legible Monumental inscriptions in the Church and Churchyard and you probably can buy these as a booklet. British History on line has: In 1541 the manor of Wormley, with the advowson of the rectory and parish church, was granted, as part of the possessions of Waltham Holy Cross, to Edward North, Treasurer of the Court of Augmentations, (fn. 11) who in the same year received licence to alienate it to William Woodliffe, mercer, of London. (fn. 12) William Woodliffe had two daughters: Ann, who married John Purvey, and Angelette, (fn. 13) who married Walter Tooke. (fn. 14) On the death of their father in 1548 they appear to have been co-heirs, Angelette receiving half the manor in 1553. (fn. 15) John Purvey, who survived his wife, died in 1583, and at his death was seised of the manor-house of Wormley with right of alternate presentation to the church. (fn. 16) He was succeeded by his son William Purvey, who appears to have been in possession of the whole manor by 1597. (fn. 17) William Purvey died without issue in 1617, having settled the manor and manor-house of Wormley, with righ! t of alternate presentation to the rectory, on his wife Dorothy, sister of Edward Lord Denny, who survived him. (fn. 18) Ralph Tooke, son and heir of Angelette, is mentioned in the inquisition as his heir. Dorothy Purvey re-married, her second husband being George Purefoy of Wadley, Berks., (fn. 19) and in 1621 the manor and advowson of Wormley passed to John Tooke, brother of Ralph, (fn. 20) and his heirs. (fn. 21) Courts were being held in the name of Ralph and John Tooke in 1633. On the death of John Tooke in 1634 the manor was left to his brother Thomas Tooke for sixty years for performance of John's will, with remainder to the male heirs of Ralph Tooke. (fn. 22) Ralph died without issue, (fn. 23) and the manor appears then to have gone to his remaining brothers, George and Thomas Tooke. (fn. 24) George Tooke sold his moiety of the manor to Richard Woollaston, who died in 1691, leaving a son John, who survived him for a year only. John Woollaston was succeeded by his el! dest son Richard. (fn. 25) In 1669 Thomas Tooke devised his mo! iety of the manor to trustees for the payment of his debts, and after his death it was sold successively to William Hastings, Elizabeth Reynolds, and, finally, to Thomas Winford, who bought it in 1684 or earlier. (fn. 26) In 1692 Thomas Winford conveyed to Richard Woollaston his moiety of the manor, (fn. 27) with the exception of the manor-house of Wormley Bury, with appurtenances, which he sold to William Wallis of Holborn in 1697. (fn. 28) In this way Richard Woollaston became lord of the whole manor. From: 'Parishes: Wormley', A History of the County of Hertford: volume 3 (1912), pp. 487-490. They had also baptised Ralph & Martha in Cheshunt in 1641 & 44 respectively. No doubt there are missing kids. I have scanned the registers till early 18th C with nothing further found. 3. I have just looked through the Church records for Wormley & Essendon. Seeing as there seem to be quite a few of the TOOKE family 'of' these two places the lack of BMDs for them is a little disappointing. Wormley, records only start in 1674, no TOOKE events noted. Essendon, records commence 1653. Ralph TOOKE was the minister till his death [bur 21 Nov 1657] I suspect he may have been son of George TOOKE by 1st wife Anne TUCK [+ 1642] George m[2] Margery CONINGSBY Ralph m 1656 Nth Mimms Blanche, dau of Thos CONINGSBY, of Nth Mimms [sister of Margery supra]. 3. Thank you Daphne for your offer, John and Mike for your response. I have checked Edith Hunts book and the maps do not show what I need, www.old-maps.co.uk, didn't show me anything (unless I'm doing something wrong) but I'll keep trying. What I'm looking for (if it exists) is a map showing me the streets around Amwell End and Ware in the period 1850-1900, as I had many rellies in that area I'm trying to place their abodes and proximity to each other. I have been trying to follow census addresses but without a map (so much has changed) to show the old names I'm getting lost. Many thanks again to you all Josi.
