    3. On the IGI, as I expect you know, George's surname is BUNAGE. It does seem fairly likely that Sarah was a widow as I could find no record of a Sarah OGGLESBY born in the right time frame, in or out of Harpenden, Hertfordshire. The Harpenden parish records are rather incomplete -- having been born and grown up there, with all my ancestors on my father's side in the area, I find it a little frustrating ...... Good luck! I am particularly interested in whether she was single or a widow. The name Bunning seems to have had difficulty with the transcibers. In 1871 it is Birnnye! Thanks for any help Jean in New Zealand

I assume that the children would attend a nearby school, so I would be most grateful if anyone can give a clue as to which school this would be, and if any school records are available for inspection? Thanks in advance for any advice. Mal in W. Australia

    3. Hi, the name Thorowgood is found in Norfolk , which is also an early migrant county , I forget which Thorowgood emigrated from Grimston in Norfolk but I think he was a short lived emigrant and died in Jamestown ....around the Civil War ( 1640-1660) . In the Documentsonline which includes PCC wills 1358- 1858, there are some early Ashbys , Thomas Ashbie or Ashby , gentleman , of Quenby , Leics , will dated 1639 is one that springs out .........you can download this for £3.50 . another is Thomas Ashby , gentleman of Albury , Herts, will dated1687, Thomas Ashby, gentleman of Hertford, will dated 1722 . Other Ashby wills include Shukbrugh Ashby of Quenby , 1792. Elizabeth Ashby, widow , of Quenby , dated 1682 , and George Ashby, of Quenby , 1728 and Hannah , widow , Quenby , 1732 . I cannot imagine that the SC Ashby conjured the name Quenby out of thin air , so he must have been of Quenby or related to the Ashbys of Quenby . Google reveals Quenby Hall , in the parish of Hungarton, and says it was built by George Ashby in 1627. I maintain the ASHBY-L (list) at rootsweb and we have a few folks who have done the DNA test but, don't believe we have anyone from the UK that has tested. The first known/proven Ashby ancestor in the U.S. (for many of us) is the Thomas Ashby (1680-1752) in VA who may have been born in England. he may have been from Ashby de la Zouche and there is a John Ashby whose immigration from the U.K. was to South Carolina. He married a Thorowgood. There is a connection to a Quenby estate, because the John named his property in SC, Quenby. But, many people mistakenly believe that he is the father of Thomas.. He is NOT !. There were Thorowgood/Thorogood men in VA, too. He left family in SC but he and his wife, Elizabeth returned to England. So, here I am asking if any of you on the list can help? We especially need a male Ashby, who has taken the DNA test or would be willing to take it for at least the 37 marker..(FamilyTreeDNA site has a sale going on, now). Or, if any Ashby has some documentation that can tie us together, that would be really appreciated!! Thanks so much for any help. Sue Ashby

    3. >From Michael Blain Wellington Cathedral of St Paul. "The previous priest, the erratic Ritualist Arthur Baker, had just fled the country after charges of sexual assault against a schoolgirl from Nelson. Henry St Hill, a leading church member and the resident magistrate, had heard the case brought against his own parish priest." This predates his sermon on Temptation and its Value! To be fair Baker's conviction was quashed by the NZ Supreme Court; there was a Civil Trial as well as a Criminal Trial and the former resulted in Baker being awarded damages. A lengthy paper on the trials written in 2005 can be found as a PDF file by Googling for Arthur Baker and Wellington. 1. [HRT] KITE/BENNETT, Welwyn/Hatfield
    2. Graham Price
    3. Hi all First time on this list, for obvious reasons. People move. I found on the Rootsweb surname list one Patricia Jobling who was researching the KITE family name in Devon and also with connections, it seems to Welwyn in Hertfordshire. Unfortunately her email bounced. Anyway, rather than re-type my interests I will give you the info that I attempted to send to Patricia (hopefully she is still on the list with another ISP?) Hello Patricia Greetings from Australia, lost in the World Cup to Germany! Ha! Anyway, I see an amazing coincidence in your Rootsweb entry in that you have Welwyn as your submitter's name. You may or may not be able to help me. I have only just received the Will of one of my Bennetts - Alfred John, second cousin twice removed 1861-1943. Various art experts in the UK seem to have him listed as the artist who created various watercolour/paint/etchings etc. in London late 1800s-early 1900s and have him dying around 1921. I think I have now proven that this is not so as my Alfred John was a distillery traveller in his later days, though fits with their earlier ideas of him being a jeweller. Anyway, I digress. The Will is executed by his two cousins George William Bennett b. 1885 and George's brother Thomas Harold Bennett b. 1887 and one Violet Irene Oakman who is a relative to Alfred's second wife. Last known address is "The Orchard" Sandal Road, New Maldon, Surrey. The Will, thank goodness, also mentions George William's daughter Joyce and Thomas Harold's daughter Elizabeth. I am fairly sure that I have found the two marriages of both George and Thomas. You will be interested in the marriage (according to FreeBmd) of George W Bennett to Gladys A. Kite, Sept Qtr 1919 3a 2121 Hatfield. My George's known address in 1943 is 94 Cassiobury Drive, Hatfield, Hertfordshire. Glady's A. Kite certainly appears to be (according to census data) the daughter of John Alfred Kite, medical practitioner of High Street, Welwyn, Hertfordshire. (FreeBMD Births Mar Qtr 1842 Kite John Alfred, Dover 5 115). Fascinating! (FreeBmd Dec Qtr 1893, Hatfield - Kite, Gladys Ada). Then I find the birth of Joyce obviously the same as mentioned in the Will - Bennett Joyce A, mother Kite, Sep Qtr 1929 Uxbridge 3a 61. Two other children with the same details are Bennett Alfred J (probably Alfred John) Mar Qtr 1925 Uxbridge 3a 65 and Bennett Alan, Mar Qtr 1926 Uxbridge 3a 82. Two others who probably fit in (as George was from Fulham) are Bennett Phyllis M sep Qtr 1923 Frome 5c 595 and Bennett Richard G (undoubtedly George) Mar Qtr 1924 Fulham 1a 505. I think I am going to have to apply for the marriage certificates of both George and Thomas to prove all of this out, but in the meantime if you have any info which you consider fits I certainly would be very happy to receive it. On the Kite side living with John Alfred Kite in 1901 at Welwyn was Lucy S (?) Kite, mother-in-law, widow 72, born Cheshire, Macclesfield. The 1891 shows her at Welwyn Hill, Welwyn as wife to William H Kite, Clerk to Guardians of the Workhouse and Lucy is the Matron. Love to hear from you if you have any further info as to the Kite/Bennett family and if I can be of any help to you, only too pleased to do so. Cheers Graham Melbourne Australia

    3. Hello Having just joined the list, I would be most grateful if some of the members could assist me with a Hertfordshire query .. a county that I have discovered a link to. My interest is in the HIBBLE brothers, Charles, Alfred & Walter HIBBLE who were born in the 1820's and early 1830's in Middlesex, England. I was quite surprised to find the trio in the 1841 census in Rickmansworth, and from looking at the other people on the census page, it would appear that the boys were at boarding school. NB. The Arthur that is listed is an error and the census should have recorded the correct name of Alfred. The page on which they appear just says town, and the prior page has some of the residents in "Basing house in the town". Is this enough information to determine which school the boys attended? Any information on the school would be of most interest. School records would be incredible!!!!!! There is no known link to this area. Their father, Charles HIBBLE, was for a time, a Licensed Victualler in the Covent Gardens area of Middlesex. Thanks Beth New Zealand
