    2. Geoff Morse
    3. Hi Keith, I had a quick look at the 1837online site, but didn't find an Emily Charge marriage in Watford for 1907/08 - are you sure of the year? I didn't look for William Smith because it is such a common name & there will probably be number of them. I notice there are four Charge marriages on FreeBMD between 1901 and 1909, but none of them is Emily. One however is a James in 1907 which I also found on 1837online. Could these Charge's be siblings of Emily? 3. Hello Keith Have you tried 1837online, which has the full births, marriages and deaths index for England and Wales? You can buy the equivalent of £5 worth of units which will enable you to carry out around 50 searches. This will give you the reference which you will then need to apply to the General Register Office for a copy of the certificate. 3. Hi Josie, When we subscribe to a mail list - we receive Every Message sent to the mail list - not just our interests. Perhaps at this time - we do not have anyone researching the BUTTERFIELD surname - Some have success quite early in their research - others take time. The mail lists - and the postings - allow us - to learn the research methods of others - see what reference sources are available. - learn of the success of others - It allows others to help us - where they can - and also allows us - to help [ it feels good]. It is Usually Best: to show the Surname of interest , in Capital Letters - on the Subject Line, along with the given name if known, location if known - time frame if known. Some people who might be able to help - may belong to many mail lists - and just scan the subject lines. No name - and the message is deleted without being read. 3. Dear Patti, It was a case of not looking what I was doing and hit the wrong button. I was interested in the topic as I was so pleased to find Great grandmother's family after a lot of searching. Then I came to a full stop with her parents. In a small village, within seven years ( 1788-1795) there were three John SUCKLINGS married Elizabeths. I started to get all the information I could. I have only recorded two girls baptised (1797 and 1799) to a John and Elizabeth SUCKLING. Is it a good assumption that they are the children of John SUCKLING and Elizabeth DIGBY married 1795? I will have to order the film again through the Family Centre and maybe do a SUCKLING name study as has been suggested. Thanks to Robert for bringing up the topic and Patti for your remarks. It has got me thinking and will make me have another go at solving the brickwall Regards Brenda ----- Original Message ----- From: "patricia salter" <ps015p6402@blueyonder.co.uk> To: <ENG-HERTFORDSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, March 22, 2005 11:06 PM Subject: Re: [Herts] Re: Too many candidates Hi Brenda > Did you forget to type your message? > Patti > ----- Original Message ----- ==== ENG-HERTFORDSHIRE Mailing List ==== > For any updates our info about the status of this list go to > http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com

    1. St. Lawrence, Abbots Langley - Henry H. DARKE
    2. Hello from a new lister. I have finally discovered that my g.g.g.grandfather, Henry Hyett DARKE, Birmingham born and bred, spent the last years of his life in Hertfordshire (I think as manager of a paper mill). I have found that he is buried at St. Lawrence, Abbots Langley. According to a microfiche of memorial inscriptions for that church, he is in section C, C338. The inscription reads: "Henry Hyett DARKE d. 30 Nov. 1871 aged 59 years Also Sarah Ann, d. 2 Oct 1887 aged 75 Also daughter Sarah Jane d 4 May 1932 aged 84" I was wondering if there are any Abbots Langley residents on the list, who might be familiar with the churchyard. I would dearly love to know what condition the memorial is in, and if anyone could email a digital photo, or "real" photo (all costs reimbursed of course) I would be even happier! But just to know it is still standing and in reasonable order would be great, Best regards, Jane Nicholas Melbourne, Australia

    2. I wonder if anyone might be able to help with a baptism record for my great great grandfather John Bray RUDD. He was born about 1826. According to the 1871 census he was born in Red Hill, Hertfordshire. In the 1881 census he gave his place of birth as Landown, Hertfordshire. I can't find Landown anywhere on Genuki or in my road atlas but there does seem to be a small village called Redhill which is near Wallington, Baldock and Letchworth. John moved to London where he married Isabel HUNTER on 27th November 1858 in Stepney. At the time of the marriage he was a licensed victualler but by 1871 he was working as a wheelwright. I don't know how accessible the early Hertfordshire censuses are and I don't know when John moved to London but if anyone is able to locate him in the 1851 census I would also be most grateful. Debbie Kennett Berkshire Hertfordshire names include: PIGG, WOLFENDEN/WOOLFENDEN, AMER and ANDREWS Also researching CRUWYS worldwide

    3. Hi List, Carrying on this topic, I once had the problem of deciding which Thomas and Ann's marriage was the correct one; both equi-distant from my parish of interest within 6 months of each other. I actually traced down each line from the parents and discovered that one of the grandchildren had been given his grandmother's maiden name as a middle name. It allowed me to pick the correct marriage! Another problem solved!!
