My GGGGF, John BATES, is believed to have immigrated to the United States between 1785 and 1795 however we have no further information whatsoever. All the indications we have is that he was born in England about 1769-1773 by using his reported age recorded in various places. The only listing I have been able to located shows a John BATES born to James BATES and Mary Field 1 sep 1771 in Willian, Hertford, England. There are other siblings notable Mary BATES that married Elias EASTWAY (or EASTAWAY) 13 Jun 1793 in Willian, Hertford, England then immigrated to the U.S. but no records, other than U.S. census records, have been located. I am of the opinion that John traveled with his sister and husband, possibly under their name, to either New York or Philidelphia then drifted south to Charleston, SC where he was married then later moved to Griffin, Spalding Co, Ga. Is there any way to determine if John left the Willian area at the same time as Mary and Elias EASTWAY? The only listing I have been able to locate is with the WOOD Family listing on Ancestry.com. Any help would be appreciated. William G. BATES
Judy, I don't know of a connection as my GREEN's came from Mile End/Stepney area in London. My grandmother was Emma Annie Lawton (nee Green) and two of her sisters Catherine Lodge (nee Green) and Agnes Maud Langdale (nee Green) all lived in Shaftesbury Road, Watford. Some of the family think her brother William also lived there at some time. Her nephew Nathan Green is believed to have lived somewhere in Bushey, probably after WW2. I see you've got a Paradine in the family. My father's sister is married to a Paradine and his family are from Bushey. Hi Lou This one might be completely wrong but it's the closest I can get. I wondered if William George was known by his second name. So many of my relations were at that time. I've come across this family. His father isn't a cowman but at least he's a William. Bev Datchworth is well represented on the IGI and there are baptisms for George, David and Arthur there. Hi List, As I am new to the list I apologise in advance for giving you my problem!! I have a William George Hobden marrying in 1918,Hitchin,to an Evelyn Gertrude May Robinson. They both give their ages as 22 which would mean birth dates of around 1896. Evelyn I have found as she was born in Harwich,William - nothing! I can't find him on the 1901 census, nor his father, also William George, cowman.I have searched the 1837 registers, but he's not there! He did serve with the 10th batallion,Queens regiment for which he was awarded two medals, but his records have not survived!! Their daughter Patricia was born in Hitchin in March 1920,but within five years Evelyn had married again - in Essex! I haven't yet found any record of William Georges death! I have so many questions! They married at the registry office,so would the office hold records of marriage applications? Why,when Evelyn was an Essex girl, did she marry in Hitchin? Are there any electoral rolls,or other books, that can be viewed to determine wether the Hobden family lived in or near Hitchin around the time of this marriage? I am so sorry to ask so many questions but William George is now taking over my every day thinking!! Any help or advice as to what to do next would really be appreciated. Thanks very much, Lou
Hi all, Just starting a bit of research on this name. My g.g.grandmother Clara SEARLL married Arthur HIPGRAVE in March 1874 in Croydon, Surrey. Arthur was born abt.1849 in Hertfordshire. I've checked on the civil registration records, and I've found an Arthur HIPGRAVE b.Sep 1849, District Hertford, County Hertfordshire. In the 1891 census they had five children: Walter (6), Clara (8), Charles (10), Richard (16), and George (19)(George was born out of wedlock, his birth cerficate shows his surname as Searll). I found him (spelled HEPGRAVE) on the 1871 census for Morden, Surrey (age 22) living as a boarder with another "HEPGRAVE" family --- as follows: Head: George Hepgrave (age 49 - born Datchworth, Hertfordshire) Wife: Elizabeth Hepgrave (age 40 - born Shoreditch, Middlesex) Son: James C Hepgrave (age 18 - born Datchworth, Hertfordshire) Son: Samuel Hepgrave (age 13 - born Dutchworth, Hertfordshire) Daughter: Agnes J Hepgrave (age 11 - born Datchworth, Hertfordshire) Daughter: Emily Hepgrave (age 8 - born Datchworth, Hertfordshire) Son: David G Hepgrave (age 6 - born Datchworth, Hertfordshire) Son: Walter Hepgrave (age 4 - born Datchworth, Hertfordshire) Son: Douglas W Hepgrave (age 1 month - born Morden, Surrey) Boarder: Arthur Hepgrave (age 22 - born Datchworth, Hertfordshire) Boarder: David Hepgrave (age 33 - born Datchworth, Hertfordshire) If anyone has the 1851 & 61 census I would really appreciate a look up of these families. Wondering why Arthur and David are living with family in Morden. Thank you. Kind regards, Bev Searle-Freeman Dease Lake, BC Canada

There may have been many unmarried or single mothers at that time due to the slaughter in France. We have at least two instances of ancestors who "died in the war" and we have found that one of them did not. My great aunt had a baby about that time; I think it was one of the reasons that they moved from Suffolk. Others may have sent the girl off to a relative with a covering story about her 'husband' for the 'aunt' or whatever relative to tell her neighbours. Also check the various websites on workhouses, they should be able to inform you of the nearest one and whether it was still functioning then. Philip Maddocks

Dear Pam, 'My' EDWARDS lot appear to 'start' with the marriage (at Aston, Hertfordshire, in 1816) of Thomas EDWARDS (died 1849 at Barton-in-the-Clay, Bedfordshire), who appears to have been born somewhere in about 1794, and Ann CHALKLEY (1795 - 1882), who was my GGG Aunt. I believe that they had eight children including Elizabeth EDWARDS who married Francis TOOLEY at Barton-in-the-Clay in 1847; Henry EDWARDS who married Sarah CHALKLEY (my first cousin three times removed) at Aston, Hertfordshire, in 1853; and Augustus Charles EDWARDs who married Emma WILSON at Tring, Herts., in 1864. I hope that helps you - and me! Yours, etc. Geoffrey.
If anybody is related to this family, could they please contact me off line? Many thanks Chris
