    2. Peter & Gwen
    3. Hello William, Just wondering if any of your BATES came from the Abbots Langley or Watford a little to the south west of Willian but still in Hertford. My great grandfather Benjamin BATES was born c1815 in, we believe,Abbots Langley where his father reportedly was a publican. In 1837 Benjamin married Sarah NOLES/NOWLES/KNOWLES in the parish church Rickmansworth. By coincidence Sarah's sister married a FIELD. (Sarah's name is spelt NOLES on the Church Register for her marriage to Benjamin, Nowles on the birth certificates for those children for whom I have birth certificates and KNOWLES on her death certificate. Although undocumented, I believe Benjamin's parents were Thomas BATES and Mary and that Thomas' father was JOHN, another coincidence??. Would like to hear your thoughts on this. Peter S BATES. HOMEWOOD Deborah Watson STUBBS Shirley WHITFIELD Deborah Jane MILLER I have not been in touch with any of them yet as the only email address I had was for Eleanor B. HOMWOOD and an email came back as undeliverable. BYW: You are the first that has answered any of my queries into England as an active searcher other than someone a while back that indicated there were no more BATE's (BATES') living in the Lydd, Kent, Eng area. From the above, and your response, it may be possible to link what you have with the WOOD FAMILY listing but it needs further proofs either direct or indirect. Also, FYI, if this can be linked to my GGGGF and if John BATES (1695) linked backward to the Lydd area it will link me to the Bate of Lydd family dating backward to the 1400's (known) and possible the Celt invasion abt 1030. If you want, I can detach a GEDCOM of the above and email it to you for any further research you my think is needed. Also, I will be retiring in a couple of months and moving so my email address will probably change shortly after I move and this one will be defunct though I plan on keeping the WGB97 part but with a different ISP. Thanks and lets keep in touch. 3. Hi Linda, Do you have Frederick in the 1881 census? I think I have found him and his first wife in St Luke, Finsbury: PRO Ref No: RG11/360, folio 15, page 22 Schedule 152, 46 Rahere St Frederick TAYLOR Head Mar 23 Raequet Stringer Gloucestershire Eliza do Wife Mar 20 Case Liner Middlesex St Luke As he gave his profession as a Racket Worker in the 1891 census, this looks pretty likely to be him. I also checked on the 1871 census for Frederick, hoping to find him with his parents, but the only Frederick TAYLOR I could find who was born in Tetbury (from 1891 census) was one who was in Tetbury Workhouse: PRO Ref No: RG10/2643, folio 106, page 31 Schedule 160 Workhouse Frederick TAYLOR Pauper 12 Scholar (Pauper) Gloucestershire Tetbury. Perhaps someone else on the list who has the 1861 census could find Frederick and his parents for you in the 1861 census of Tetbury. Good luck. 1. Hurndall, Lake, and Barlow/Appleby help needed, please
    2. Brian & Karyn
    3. Hello: First some quick background, and then my questions: My ancestor John Hurndall was born Great Gaddesdon, Nittleton, Hertfordshire, on 22 October 1769. He married an Ann Barlow (or was it Appleby?) from Derbyshire around 1803. His parents were Mary/Ann (nee Lake) and William Hurndall. William is buried in Little Gaddeston, Berkhamsted, but I don't exactly know when he died, save that it was around 1812. His death had something to do with Pentonville in London, even though the prison there wasn't open until 1816. Supposedly, he was born in 1743, but I have no way of verifying that, nor do I know who his parents were. An ancestor of Mary or Ann or Mary Ann Lake-Hurndall was the anti-loyalist bishop John Lake, who was executed in 1688 during the reign of William & Mary, but I have no clue as to how they're connected. So here are my questions (and if you can answer any of them -- or help me know where I can look for answers -- God bless you, because I've been totally frustrated to this point): Was John Hurndall married in Derbyshire or Hertfordshire? How would I find out one way or the other? Who was William Hurndall (he could have been born where he was buried, Little Gaddeston, Berkhamsted)? Where was he born and when? Who were his parents? Why might he have died at Pentonville since there was no prison there until 1816? Who were Mary/Ann/Mary Ann Lake's parents? Where was she born and when (I have a circa 1746 in my records)? What is the connection between her and the executed Bishop John Lake? Were the Hurndall and Lake families either prevalent or prominent in this area at the time? If you don't know the answers to these questions, do you know where I could look or with whom I could talk? Regards, Brian Sacramento, California

    1. Surname TAYLOR
    2. Linda Staunton
    3. Hi List, Posting message to Hertfordshire and Sussex, there is a bit of county hopping but I am not subscribing to anymore lists which are relevant at some point. I have a Frederick Taylor born about 1857 Gloucestershire and whose parents I have as yet not found. Frederick married Amanda Terese Smith in 1884 and I think this was a second marriage, Amanda's father was Charles H Smith They were born and lived in London in 1881 but in Hoddesdon by 1891. Frederick and Amanda had the following children: Ada M born about 1882 - Clerkenwell - by his first marriage Frederica Emily Terese - born 1885 - Islington Gwendoline C M - born about 1887 - Islington Elsie Marguerite A - born about 1889 - Islington Irene Elizabeth Bertha - born 1891 - Hoddesdon Frederick - born about 1894 - Hoddesdon By 1901, the family were living in Eastbourne. I know what happened to Frederica but wondered if anyone recognises the other daughters who have quite distinctive names. Kind regards, Linda
