Hello everyone, I've just learned that Charles Carter GODFREY lived in Perry Green, Much Hadham, during the WWII and believed to have died there. (born 1861)Because of the common name, we've not been able to zero in on his death in the Civil Registration Index. The LDS website indicates the microfilmed burials stop at 1928. Can someone please tell me what cemetery someone from Perry Green, Much Hadham, might be buried in? What would be the newspapers for this area to possibly find an obituary? Does anyone know of a St. Agnes House in Watford that would have been operating in the 1900-1945 range? Apparently it was a home for women and children that needed assistance and I believe took in a fair amount of unwed mothers. Judy BC Canada
Hi all: New lister Loretta Thomas wrote: "Or a newspaper that I could send a "seeking" letter to?" Does anyone these days read newspaper personal ads of this type? If so, can anyone help with newspapers in the St. Albans. Herts, area? Since there seems to be a "black hole" there that seems to have swallowed up my Sarah J. Giles and her father George, as nobody seems to be able to find them there, my ad would read: Seeking Sarah J. GILES, b. abt. 1830 in St. Albans, Herts, d/o George GILES. Can SKS please contact me if she is anywhere in the area in the 1841 census, or possibly the 1851. By 1861 she is married and no longer in the area. She may have left even before 1851 for all I know. Hi all, I'm new to this list and trying to find out something about Robert SIMON. Through a piece of sheer blind luck I discovered last week that he died in Watford, Herts., on 5 June 1939. Which explains why I haven't been able to find him in Wales! He is commemorated on his mother's gravestone at Llandrillo, as are two of his brothers who died in the USA. Robert's parents were Ellen THOMAS (c.1844-1906) and Walter SIMON (c.1843-1880). After Walter's death Ellen married Thomas PARRY (c1852-?). Robert's birth was registered in Aberayron in the December quarter of 1874, and his death in the June quarter of 1939 at Watford, aged 64. The cost of certs from Australia is fairly steep and I would rather try other avenues first. In 1891 Robert was living with his family in Llanynys, Denbighshire, and was an Ag Lab. By 1901 he had moved away - there is a possible Robert Owen SIMON of the right age, working as a Labourer in Chester - but he gives his birth place as the USA. Maybe he went to the USA with his brothers and, when he returned, it suited him to say he was born there? Or maybe it was just a case of confusion, especially if he was recently returned. We would love to know if he had a family, or if anyone remembers him - we have a lot family information we'd be delighted to share, particularly on the Australian branch and hisWelsh forebears. His uncle, Ellen's brother, moved to Australia and became my husband's great-grandfather. I don't know Robert's occupation, apart from labourer - would he feature in a directory or telephone book? Where is he likely to be buried? Are there any Herts burial records that might be available at a local (Aus) genealogical society? Or a newspaper that I could send a "seeking" letter to? So many questions! Many thanks, Loretta THOMAS Melbourne, Australia

New to the list, searching for Davison Family in Hertfordshire. Jeremiah Davison m. Mary Friend at Watford on 01 Jul 1766. Looking for their parents. John
Yes, I would also wonder if the birth wasn't registered. I have a relation born out of wedlock in 1906 and his birth was also never registered. We know for this sure because his mother told him so when he was in his 60s and needing to produce his birth certificate to apply for a pension! It seems failing to register births wasn't uncommon. Hope you can find some other clues to help instead! Hi There, It is possible his birth was never registered. I do have same problem with one of mine. He could of course be in Baptisimal Registers where he was born if you know what area that was. Difficult one. My one is from Herts funny enough. Hope someone may be able to help you more, Best wishes Sandra CEGaules62@aol.com wrote: Can anybody please help me? Hello tesmith40! Yes this is my family, I found the same entry, too. I wasn't sure at first that they were mine, but am now. You are quite a bit further back than me in tracing the Pegrams, congratulations! I know how much work that is. You never know, but our trees might connect up at some point. According to the 1861 Census at Egham in Surrey, George Frederick FURNIVALL was born at Hemel Hempstead in about 1781 or 1782. I would be most grateful if SKS with access to the relevant Parish Register could check for his baptism and determine the names of his parents, and (if I am extremely well-behaved) for any siblings he might have please. I am hoping that George might have had a brother called William Henry. In hope ... Wendy Verwood, Dorset, UK
I have posed to several lists in England/Scotland/Ireland attempting to locate someone doing research into the BATES family but so far NADA. I am posting again into the Hertfordshire list attempting to trace John BATES, b: 1 Sep 1771, son of Thomas BATES (1732 -??) and Mary Field (1736 - ??). John is reported born in Willian and James is listed as Baldock. James is the son of John BATES and Mary Housely (no dates or locations given). James and Mary had to following children: Mary BATES 29 Oct 1769 Willian Married Elias EASTWAY 13 Jun 1793 Willian John BATES 1 Sep 1771 Willian James BATES Aug 1773 Tring d: bef 1777 Hertford Joseph BATES 28 Dec 1774 Duffield, Derby Sarah BATES 3 May 1776 Holy Trinity, Gosport, Hampshire James Agusta BATES 20 Apr 1777 St Thomas, Portsmouth, Hampshire Richard BATES 5 Mar 1780 St Thomas, Portsmouth, Hampshire Samuel BATES 30 Aug 1782 Kingsdare, Hampsire Elizabeth BATES 13 Jul 1783 Grandborough, Warwick d: abt 1784 Elizabeth BATES 1785 Kingsdare, Hampshire Mary and Elias immigraged to the U.S. after 1796 with two children and I am of the opinion that John BATES (1771) was with them possible as "Brother" and listed with surname EASTWAY vice BATES but have been unable to locate the ship's passenger manifest for confirmation. I am particularly interested in this because if the scenerio I am proposing is even remotely authenticated, then he is my GGGGF and tops a very long standing stone wall in my ancestry search. Can anyone verify the Hertford parts of the above? I plan on posting this on the Hampshire lists as well. Thanks and che-ers William G. BATES

Dear Mike, Thank you so much for your kindness and help.Living in Malta is a problem as we have no lds library on the island. My main interest in the chapel is due to the fact i just got 2 marriage certificates for 2 sisters both married in the chapel 1879. There name was Horn. Would baptisms have taken place there ? and would the family have been long standing members of the church ? Thanks a million. Very little info on the Ebeneza in Tring. basic details as follows taken from various sources.. I also have a list of various events at the chapel over the years taken from the local newspaper. I can send you these if you are interested. Adapted from "A History of Tring" by Sheila Richards. The 2nd Particular Baptist church moved, in 1808, to The Orchard, Akeman Street, owned by Mr Thomas Kingham. The present chapel, called Glover's chapel, was built there in 1832. In 1836 some members drew away from Mr Glover's chapel and moved into a barn belonging to Thomas Fleet in the West end of Tring. The barn was turned into a hall and in about 1859 they built the Ebenezer, Chapel Street, probably on the site of the original barn. From the “Tring Triangle” by Jill Fowler Although St Marthas is on the corner of Park Road and Chapel Street it is not the church that gave the road its name. The Ebenezer Chapel, built in 1859 just across the road, suggested the name. The Ebenezer chapel building is still there and was still registered for marriages until the early 1950s, although it was used for a Home Guard headquarters during the war and for commercial purposes afterwards.
