    3. Hi Eunice, I had a quick look at the IGI for George Spriggins and I think I have found your Catherine (Kitty) and family. John OMENT and Mary NEWBERRY married 18 MAy 1806 Ickelford Joseph 1807 Catherine 1808 Mary Ann 1809 James 1812 Kitty 13 Nov 1814 Phoebe 1816 ALL BORN IN ICKLEFORD Thomas 1818 William 1820 Rachel 1823 David 1825 Eliza 1828 Mary Ann above had a child Emma in 1829 James married Martha - child Rachel born in 1839 George born to Thomas and Martha in 1842 George Sprigings Oment 9 Jun 1835 to Kitty Oment Alfred Oment 29 Dec 1844 I could only see Wm, David and Catherine showing up in the censuses. But then I have only had a quick look under what I thought the names might appear. A quick look for this surname finds William b 1820 still alive in 1901 living in Holwell and seems to have been settled there for some time. In 1861 David OMANT is lodging in Hammersmith not married. In 1871 David is under CENANT still in Hammersmith married to Sophia. In 1881 David is under OMANT in Hammersmith with wife Hannah. Looks like David remarried. Hannah was born in Surrey and Sophia in Berkshire. Alfred born 1844 is in Northamptonshire in 1901. Hope this gives you something to move on with. Cheers Liz Dolan Manly Qld

    3. Thought I would have a quick look for Catherine and family in 1851. Found her at the same address Bristow's Yard Bancroft Street Hitchin. Catherine Orment Head Unm 36 Straw Plaiter born Ickelford Elizabeth Orment Dau unm 22 Straw plaiter " George Spriggins son unm 16 Foot boy msg " Emily Orment dau unm 10 straw plaiter " Alfred Orment son unm 7 infant " Mary A Orment dau unm 2 infant born Hitchin Looks like your Catherine was a single mother. Seems unusual that George has the name of what looks to be his father but not the others. Would be interesting to see if there was a claim made on Spriggins through the parish for George's support. 3. Hi Eunice, I found John and Emily where they were in 1871. Catherine and family was a different story. Found a possible candidate with the right age and a daughter Mary A born in the right place. Surname is spelt Omens. I went back to the 1871 census and it was spelt Arnant there. I believe this is her. There are no other entries that match with a daughter Mary Ann. In 1861 there is an older son Alfred. Have you look at 1851? I cannot remember if I offered to look at it for you. Images sent off list. 3. Just a little bit more to add to this thread regarding Kitty Omant, I have her baptism date as 14 April 1808, also George Spriggins 1835, Emily 1841, Alfred 1844 and Mary Ann 1849 were all Kitty's (or Catherine's) illegitimate children. The name has been spelt many different ways and I think that the name originated as HAMMOND, but that's just my opinion at the moment until I find some proof. 1. Re: [HRT] BROWN
    2. Dear Eunice, I've been following the answers you received regarding Catherine ORNANT (as you spelled her last name) as the mention of George SPRIGGINS caught my eye. I can give you a little bit of insight into her....and the George SPRIGGINS that is listed as her son. Seems her surname has many spellings depending on who is reading the transcripts....OMANT (is the spelling used by the LDS in their IGI files)....the census seems to have OMENT and OMANT....I have not seen the spelling you used (ORNANT) or those that found her in the census (ORNENT)....could be a handwriting issue. Anyway....This is the information that I have for her: Ickleford Baptisms 1814 Parish Register: Novemr 13th, Kitty, daughter of John & Mary Omant, Ickleford, Labourer 1841 Census of England, Ickleford OMANT, Mary, Age 56, Plaiter OMANT, Kate, age 26, Plaiter OMANT, William, age 20, Ag Lab OMANT, David, age 16, Ag Lab OMANT, Eliza, age 11, Plaiter OMANT, George, age 7 OMANT, Emily, age 5 months * believe the George Omant listed above to be the illegitimate son of Kate (Kitty) Omant and George Sprigings (b. 1809) Listed as George SPRIGGINS in parish regsiter for baptism. ** believe Kate to be the same as "Kitty" (both diminuatives of Catherine) The IGI lists the baptism of George as follows: George SPRIGINGS OMENT Christening: 9 Jun 1835, Ickleford, Hertford Parents: Mother: Kitty OMENT but his baptism records shows the word "illegitimate" Baptism, Ickleford Parish Church Records Page 47, Entry No. 373 Date: June 9, 1835 Child's Name: George Spriggins Parent's Name: Kitty Omant (Illegitimate written underneath) Abode: Ickleford Profession: Straw Plaiter By whom ceremony performed: H. L. Gates (?) 1851 Census of England, Hitchin, Bancroft Street OMENT, Catherine, Head, Unmarried age 36, Straw Plaiter, born Ickleford, Herts OMENT, Eliza, Sister, Unmarried, age 22, Straw Plaiter, born Ickleford, Herts SPRIGGINS, George, Son, Unmarried, age 16, Footboy, born Ickleford, Herts OMENT, Emily, Daur, Unmarried, age 10, Straw Plaiter, born Ickleford, Herts OMENT, Alfred, Son, age 7, Infant, born Ickleford, Herts OMENT, Marian, age 2, (infant) born Hitchin, Herts 1861 Census of England, Hitchin OMENT, Catherine, Head, Unmarried, age 46, Straw Plaiter, born Ickleford, Herts OMENT, Alfred, Son, Unmarried, age 17, Ag Lab, born Ickleford Herts OMENT, Mary A, Daughter, age 12, Straw Plaiter, born Hitchin, Herts 1881 Census of England, Ickleford Road, Hitchin OMANT, Catherine, Boarder, Unmarried, age 66, Nurse Domestic, born Ickleford, Herts at the home of: ALLEN, Phillip, Head, Married, age 73, Retired Carpenter, born Hitchin, Herts ALLEN, Sarah Ann, Wife, Married, age 70, born Baldock, Herts I have done extensive research on the SPRIGGINS / SPRIGINGS / SPRIGGENS side of the family and have come to believe that Catherine "Kitty" ORMANT ( daughter of John OMANT and Mary NEWBERRY) had an illegitimate son with George SPRIGGINS (b. about 1809). Although I have no definite proof that he is indeed the father, he was in the Ickleford area at the time and with the family naming patterns believe this to be highly likely. It also might interest you to know that Catherine's brother Thomas OMANT (and his cousin Daniel Newberry) were convicted of stealing (also prior records of poaching and assault) with Thomas being transported for life years to Van Diemans Land (now Tasmania, Australia) in 1837. In the convict records his mother is listed as Mary Newberry Omant. I have more information specific to the SPRIGGINS side of the this family if you are interested that I would be glad to share. 3. Hello Paul, I don't know if you have the census records. but here goes: 1871 census Bermondsey PRO Ref No: RG10/636, folio 66, page 54 Schedule 304, 18 Clements Road Matthew TAYLOR Head Mar 29 Commercial Clerk Lewes Sussex Ellen do Wife Mar 28 Cheltenham Gloucerstersh Francis J do Son 7 Scholar Stepney Middx Henry do Son 5 do do do George H do Son 2 Bermondsey Surrey Mary A BROWN Lodger W 57 Chertsey do Frederick do " Son 14 Rotherhithe do 1881 census Hornsey, Middlesex PRO Ref: RG11/1376, folio 99, page 74 Schedule 299, Cedar Terrace Park Road 10 Matthew TAYLOR Head Mar 51 Clerk Sussex Lewes Ellen do Wife Mar 38 Gloucestershire Cheltenham Frank J do Son Unm 17 Clerk Middlesex Stepney Henry do Son 15 Clerk do do George do Son 12 Scholar Surrey Bermondsey Ellen E do Daur 9 do do do Walter W do Son 7 do do do Ellen do Niece 18 Gloucestershire Cheltenham 1891 census Islington PRO Ref: RG12/141, folio 157, pages 5/6 Schedule 34, 30 St Johns Park Matthew TAYLOR Head M 61 Clerk Commercial Sussex Lewes Ellen do Wife M 48 Glouc Cheltenham Henry do Son S 25 Clerk Commercial London Stepney Geo H do Son S 22 Carman Inn London Bermondsey Ellen E do Daur S 19 do do Florence M M do Daur S 7 Scholar do Hornsey I am having great trouble finding Francis/Frank in the 1891 census. There is one staying in Islington RG12/146, folio 33, page 62 with a Frederick TAYLOR (aged 31, born London, who is a decorator). This Frank is described as Brother, aged 25, Single, a Carman (which would fit) but born in Highgate. However all Frederick's children are described as born in Highgate and Frank is tagged on at the end with ditto marks as to place of birth, so it may be an error. 1901 census, Watford, Herts PRO Ref: RG13/1316, folio 65, page 21 Schedule 122, 22 Garfield St Frank TAYLOR Head Mar 35 Grocers Carman London Upper Holloway Frances do Wife Mar 33 Dorset Rowerstock Alfred do Son 4 Herts Watford Harry do Son 2 do do May do Daur 2 mo do do Hope this helps in some way and I haven't just duplicated what you already know!! 1. 1861 & 1871 census Obed Kempster
    2. Wendy Pepper
    3. I am new to this list and wonder if anyone can help me track Obed Kempster and his family. According to the IGI, he was baptised in Latimer on 4 June 1826. On the 1851 census he was living at Ashley Green, Chesham Bucks, aged 25 agricultural labourer, place of birth given as Flaunden, Herts. He is not on the 1861 census in Bucks so I wonder if he had moved to Herts by that time. On the 1881 census, he was living at Kings Hill, Berkhampstead, aged 56 place of birth given as Flanding, Herts. One of is sons, William Henry Kempster, was living in Hog Lane, Northchurch at the time of the 1881 and 1901 census. I would be delgihted to hear from anyone who is interested in this family. Any help would be much appreciated. Wendy Pepper
