    1. Joseph GEARY - Great Berkhamstead
    2. Gay O'Neill
    3. Hi Sue, I would think a farmer at the age of 72 would be an Ag labourer, agriculture.. meaning farming. Also when peoples occupation was noted in the census, it was not always stated by the person themselves. In my case of blacksmiths, they were also called farriers, smithys and iron mongers. I have just discovered that my Great Great Grandfather said he was a widow in the 1871 census, in fact his wife did not die until 1874. In 1871 he was 71 years of age and his death certificate in 1880 stated he died from senile decay.. I would think that senility had set in by 1871 or he had been separated from his wife for so long that he thought he was a widow, or others around him assumed he was a widow. His wife had not lived with him since 1861, according to census information but with their daughter in a different county. 2. Sherry Landa
    3. Thanks Judy, I have found that Watford Museum (didn't even know there was one) has some Workhouse births and deaths registers and punishment book. (This is from Archon) I have now emailed them asking how if I can find out, at a distance, if they have anything on James BELCH. Their site doesn't say they do research but if they have an archive then they should allow public assess-I assume!!! Will see what they say, then try LMA as the next port of call. Sherry A Lot of the records for HALS is now being stored at London Metropolitan Archives.

    1. Re: [HRT] STURGEON
    2. Jill, I did a search on Ancestry.com for an ELIZABETH STURGEON born about 1892 in England. I came up with 2 hits in the England & Wales Civil Registration Index. Here are the results if you want to order the birth certificate from the GRO to find out positive her parents and possibly the place of birth. Name: Sturgeon, Elizabeth Record Type: Births Quarter: September Year: 1892 District: Hertford County: Hertfordshire Volume: 3a Page: 544 Name: Sturgeon, Elizabeth Ann Record Type: Births Quarter: March Year: 1892 District: London City County: London Middlesex Volume: 1c Page: 2 Here's the marriage info I found for ALFRED STURGEON to ELIZABETH FRENCH Quarter: March Year: 1892 District: Edmonton County: Essex Hertfordshire Middlesex Volume 3a Page 360 I didn't find a listing for the death of Alfred Sturgeon in 1893. Could not find Elizabeth Sturgeon mother or daughter in the 1901 census. This probably isn't what you were hoping for, but the best I could do. Hope someone else may come along and do a better job for you. Good luck in the hunt! Theresa E. 3. Thank you so much, Ron. You are an absolute star (and an angel). Sherry Try this site for workhouses http://www.users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouses/watford I have telephoned Watford Centra Library and no inmate records survived but the 1871 census will show all inmates and they have meetings records but the would mean searching through the records to see if the person you want is mentioned

    2. hey wyre
    3. Sherry: A Lot of the records for HALS is now being stored at London Metropolitan Archives. I know this because I spent 4 years looking for my husband's adoption records, constantly being told they could be obtained through HALS (as he was born in Watford), talking to everyone, I am sure, that works there and yet still nothing. It was simply by sure luck I found them at LMA -give it a try Judy BC Canada ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Sherry Landa" <sherry@slanda.fsnet.co.uk> Reply-To: ENG-HERTFORDSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com To: ENG-HERTFORDSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [HRT] Watford Workhouse records Date: Sat, 18 Jun 2005 09:20:53 +0100 Hi, I am a returning subscriber who has been away for quite a while. 1. Joseph GEARY - Great Berkhamstead
    2. Sue Waller
    3. I've recently discovered that Kezia WALLER last seen in the 1841 Census of Two Waters, Hemel Hempstead married Joseph GEARY born in Gt.Berkhamstead.c.1821. They had two children before they sailed to NSW on the 'Thomas Artbuthnot' on 17 January 1849. From the information I've been given (transcription of Joseph's death from NSW Registry of BMD's) Joseph's father's name was also Joseph and he was a 'Farmer'. I'm unable to find a baptism for Joseph GEARY and the 1861 Census only has 'GEARY' names born in Northchurch which is of course possible as the two places are so close together. There is a Joseph GEARY aged 72 (widower) lodging with a family in Bushey although he says he's an ag.lab. and not a farmer. I'm hoping that someone will have access to the 1841 Census when I should find Joseph at home with his parents. Many thanks for any help. Sue (Kent)

    3. Hiya, I wonder if anyone could help me please, I have been searching the 1841 census for a THOMAS HUDGELL aged about 18 from Hertford St Andrews and I cant find him at all in that area, is it just my eyes or could anyone else please help me to find him, 3 years later in 1844 he was convicted of a crime and transported but died on the ship on the way out to Tasmania aged 22, I believe he is my direct line, therefore it would make all the difference if I could find him in 1844 with his family, any help if you had time would be much appreciated, thanks so much, Pam www.hudgill.co.uk

    1. Re: [HRT] OLD PARK ROAD, HITCHIN
    2. I have two photographs of Old Park Road Hitchin. One shows the junction with Paynes Park in 1895 and the other portrays the Waggon and Horses pub on the corner with Tilehouse Street 1970 before the County Court was built. Are these of any interest? Hitchin Museum has a grand collection of old photographs which may include Old Park Road. They allow digital photography and I beleive they will copy photos for you. Philip
