Hi Cassy, Thanks for your reply... I appreciate it. I'll keep a copy of your CLARK info. I don't know at this point though if our CLARKs are connected. I now realize that the Joseph CLARK born @1851 in Aldenham with a sister Susan isn't mine after all, so I guess that might rule out any connections through the name Susan. And so far, I don't have the surname FRANKLIN family in my tree... maybe one day! Take care, Susan
Dear Gill, Thanks so much for writing to let me know that the Joseph CLARK born in Aldenham was not the son of William... this is a great help. I'm working with a big list of all Joseph CLARKs born @1851 in either Herts or Bucks... and have collected candidates from the 1861, 1871 and 1881 census returns... so am more than happy to be able to eliminate another candidate! Would anyone on the list have any ideas why my gr-grandfather gave 'Tring, Bucks' as his birthplace, considering Tring is part of Herts? On one census return, the birthplace is written as 'Bucks' followed by a 'w' and what looks like a superscript 'n', and then 'Tring'. I wonder if he meant 'Bucks within Tring'? I'm thinking it's possible he was actually born in Bucks, in a place close to the Bucks/Herts border. Does this seem more likely? Thank you again, Susan
Dear Betsy, not sure if you are interested but a pindar man was a man who would look after livestock for people usually on the common land and he was a well respected and trusted member of the town or village. Anyway thought i would let you know as i just found oone in my family and had no idea what it was until i asked. Could anyone help me find some information about my Day family from Ippollits in Hertfordshire. I am looking for James and Hannah Day living in Gosmore/Ippollitts. Hannah would be 40 years old. I have them on the 1861 Census but james had already died in 1859 and I would like to see if I can find some information about him and his family. In anticipation Penny

His surname on his marriage recoords was Hemmings but there are various spellings in later years, Emmines/Emmins I have information re Henrys family after 1835, happy to share with anyone linking Love to hear from anyone ,, have a happy day Betsy Qld Aus formally Croydon Sry betsysales@bigpond.com

Dear List, I've been researching my ancestor Joseph CLARK/E who has troubled me by stating in both the 1891 & 1901 census returns that he was born @1850 in Tring, BUCKS (ha!). Recently, I received his marriage registration (wed Mary Jane ROBERTS in Gravesend in 1884) which gives his father's name as William CLARK, labourer. I've checked the 1861 and 1871 census returns for a Joseph with father William... with no hits... other than a Joseph CLARK age 10 (in the 1861) living with William & Frances HART and sister Susan CLARK in Hemel Hempstead. This Joseph's birthplace is given as Aldenham, though. I did check the IGI to see if this might be another marriage for Frances... I found a Frances CLARK marrying William HART. And, in 1837, a William CLARK is shown marrying Frances Hayman HEARN in Saint Andrew's, Hertford, Hertfordshire. I'm very interested in this William & Frances. Would anyone on the list please be able to look up William & Frances CLARK on the 1851 census?... hoping this might give some more clues. Sorry for the rambling message. Thank you very much if anyone can help. Susan in Ontario, Canada
Hello Betsy, According to Hugh Wallis's IGI site (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/), your Henry had at least 2 siblings. In the 1861 census John Ives, then 36 years of age, gave his birthplace as Hertford. Unfortunately he did not name a town or village. However from his birth certificate he gave his father's name as William and who was a farmer. By 1861 John had married Hannah Platt, daughter of Richard Platt, who was born in Finchley, and had moved to Bermondsey and had five children. Has anyone an idea as to where I might search for these ancestor's birthplaces. Joan from Auckland, New Zealand.
Sorry if I'm stating the over-obvious, or if someone else has already covered this, but.... Hertford is a town - the county town of the county Hertfordshire. So perhaps he was born in Hertford, Hertfordshire ?? Gerald and Joan Hickey <hickeygj@iprolink.co.nz> wrote: In the 1861 census John Ives, then 36 years of age, gave his birthplace as Hertford.
