Hi Chris, You may like to look at my site. I have used excel to keep the various data that I have found over the years and share it with other researchers. I must admit that I have not up-dated it for a while but I believe it has been helpful to others to find LINES information in Hertfordshire and to then find me. The database contains the excel LINES information for all the LINES I have found including my ancestors and others that I have not tied into my direct family. I then have a couple of other word documents relating to my family. I do not have the greatest computing skills but one day will get back to the database and improve it.. I guess that will be when I have retired. http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/~lines/ Gay O'Neill Western Australia ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris" <cretwop@shaw.ca> To: <ENG-HERTFORDSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, September 03, 2005 1:53 AM Subject: Re: [HRT] One Name Study - Question on how to do one? > Sandra - could you advise what kind of structure you use for your Excel > sheet? Hi Chris, I dont use excel to create family trees, just to store the base information and any notes I want to add. So for example my GROBirth file contains just the information that comes from the index, but I have added columns for father and mother's names. When I transfer the information to a gedcom, I colour the row, so that I know which ones have been included in the gedcom. I am proposing to add another column shortly to put the gedcom person number in too. The advantage in this example is that I can sort on year, name, place, father, mother or any combination. As far as conversion of gedcom to excel is concerned. if you type - Gedcom converter excel - into Google it will come up with a number of possibilities. You may have to do the conversion in two stages. First Gedcom to CSV and then import the CSV file into excel. Hope this helps Sandra Chris wrote: > Sandra - could you advise what kind of structure you use for your > Excel sheet? I have tried to imagine what one would look like but got > quickly overwhelmed. Hi Am new on this list. Just found an ancestor who lived in 1917 at 'Riley House'. Does anyone have any info about Riley House? His name was David WESTON b 1854 Staffs. I got the address of Riley House from the Herts Provincial Grand Lodge. David Weston was a member of the Herts Masonic Charity Commission, apparently. He was also a founder of the Welwyn Lodge. Is Welwyn close to Waltham Cross? Regards Sue R in Oz

Theresa - I have undertaken a one-name-study of Powters. It is a great way to make connections with people all over the world! My task is relatively easy in that Powter is not widely common - mostly England, Australia and North America with a few outliers (South Africa, Argentina, some Europe). I started with the IGI records, went to other government sources (e.g., BMD sites) and then added census info. Some cautions (applicable to all genealogy work I suppose): * many of the early first names are common and there aren't many middle names so distinguishing people is difficult - your database grows even though many of the entries may in reality be the same people * one-name-study GEDCOMS are harder to work with, especially if you are a visual person, because lots of entries are not linked * it could get very expensive and time consuming if you want to do more than rely on web-based records Advice - put your study up on the web, on as many sites as you can, to get exposure to lots of people who may contact you with more info! Be prepared to have some ask why you are collecting info that isn't directly related to your own tree! So far I have managed to add only one person to my own tree from my one-name-study but I keep hoping! Hi Just a quick post to say hello and post my interests. I am researching my husbands tree at present having worked for years on my own and having met the inevitable brick walls. I am interested in any information concerning the Dowtons in Cottered. I like to go side ways on my trees filling in as many gaps as possible so any information would be gratefully received. thanks again regards Su brown
Looking at it the POTTER family are living next door to the Royston Schools National for Boys, Girls and Infants. National Schools were the schools set up by law to provide free education so Florence E POTTER may well have gone there. In faint writing after the Middlesex Southend is written 'Essex' which is the county Southend is actually in. There is no indication on the census return of who Flornce's parents were Paula > Hello > I am hoping that some of you knowledgeable souls can help me... Hello I am hoping that some of you knowledgeable souls can help me... I have the POTTER family (apparently on the 1891 Census as DOLTER) who lives at White Heart, Market Street, Royston. Source information: RG12/1102, ed 16, folio 71, pg 20 They are reported to live beside the the Royston Schools Nationals, for boys, girls and ???ords. Is this a School or otherwise. Are there school records available? I have a Florence E. who was 8 (at the time born in Southend ?? Middlesex) living with her Grandparent POTTERs (Thomas and Eliza) and their dau Mary J and their son Harry. I am assuming that if this a school that Florence would go there. I would like to confirm her last name and possibly find out her parents. She may be the dau of Mary Jane. Thanks so much for any help Sandra in Canada
