Hi Kathy, just to add to my earlier mail, you have to bear in mind that the Hitchin you mention is the GRO Registration DISTRICT which covered all of the following towns/villages Baldock, Bygrave, Caldecote, Clothall, Codicote, Graveley, Great Wymondley, Hexton, Hitchin, Holwell (from 1897), Ickleford, Ippollitts, Kimpton, King's Walden, Knebworth, Langley, Letchworth, Lilley, Little Wymondley, Newnham, Norton, Offley, Pirton, Preston, Radwell, St. Paul's Walden, Shephall, Stevenage, Walsworth, Weston, Willian. You cannot say therefore that they died in the town of Hitchin from the GRO indexes - you would need to buy the death certificates to find where they died (& that might not be where they are buried!!), or maybe you already know they were from the town of Hitchin. The good news is that the North Herts District Council covers a large number of these towns/villages, so they may be willing to check other burial grounds in the district if you explain the problem. Kathy, the main cemetery in Hitchin is in St John's Road & is managed by the local council. Their website is http://www.north-herts.gov.uk/ I found them extremely helpful when I was checking out a burial for someone researching from Canada last year. Just send an e-mail via the "Contact us" option and register an enquiry with the details & you should get a reply within a day or so. Let me know if you are successful in finding the grave(s) & I'll try to take a photo of it for you. Hi Kathy, I don't know if this is of any held. But I have just ordered a marriage certificate for someone who fell in the 'Hitchin' area. I emailed the registry office direct with the info I had, which is the same as yours. They got back to me the following day to say they had found the entry. All I have to do now is send them payment in pounds and a stamped addressed envelope and then they are going to send the certificate. I got their email and address via www.hertsdirect.org/libsleisure/heritage1/HALS/famhist/ I hope this is of help. Hello Kathy The Hertfordshire County Council has its website at http://www.hertsdirect.org/ There should be a link there which will help. If Hertfordshire works in the same way as Wiltshire, where I live, then Cemeteries are the responsibility of the city councils rather than the county. However, you will need to find out where and when they died as Hitchin District will cover several parishes. Can I suggest that you send for their death certificates in the first instance. You should be able to order them online to save time. Even then, you will have the problem of which cemetery they are in, as by the 1950s people were often taken to the parish they were born or where their other family graves were etc. See what you can find out by email, then if phone calls are needed mail me direct and I'll do what I can to help Good luck Dot in Salisbury, Wiltshire on 13/10/05 2:10 am, boggan kathryn at kathyboggan@yahoo.com.au wrote: > Hello, > I am new to this site and was wondering if anyone in > the Hitchin area might be able to help me in finding > out information of where my husbands grandparents are > buried. > I have found the following information from the > Catherine House records: > > Jane Anne Boggan age 69 (district Hitchen 1952 > December Quarter)Vol 4b P114 > > Joseph Boggan age 74 (district Hitchin 1956 September > Quarter) Vol 4b P91 > > My husband and I will be travelling to England from > Australia in November and hope to be able to visit > their graves. Hello listers, I'm hoping someone will be able to help me with a couple of questions re the above. I have research going back to about 1746, but it is John SEARLE born 1797 (my.3xGt.Grandfather)I would like to find out more about. I know he died in Hertford Goal in Jan 1847 and also that his son Esau SEARLE born 1831 was transported to Australia in 1849. John's wife Kezia CLARK is on the 1851 as a servant, so she must have had a dreadful life. Her husband dying in prison and her youngest son transported, then having to work as a servant when in her fifties. I suppose it was the only alternative to the Workhouse. I would like to know if anyone could tell me, or tell me where to find information as to what John was imprisoned for. Any help would be gratefully received Barbara ----------------------------------------- Email sent from www.ntlworld.com Virus-checked using McAfee(R) Software Visit www.ntlworld.com/security for more information
This message is being posted on behalf of Nigel Stone - _Nigel.Stone@metron.co.uk_ (mailto:Nigel.Stone@metron.co.uk) "I am not a member of the family but am trying to contact the family of Jeremiah INNS, the reason will become apparent below. I recently purchased an old Bentley which was originally delivered to Jeremiah INNS at Springfield House, High Street, Stevenage on 16th September 1935. Over the years the car has passed through many hands, some neglecting it whilst others have made alterations. 70 years ago the chassis was sent to coach builders (Arthur Mulliner of Northampton) who put a body on to the client's specification. Arthur Mulliner no longer exist and very few examples of their work survive. I was wondering, therefore, if any of the surviving family possesses photographs of the car which could be useful when restoring it back to original condition. If the INNS family is known to you, I would be obliged if could forward this message to them. Are you aware that the hertfordshire Record Society had their AGM at Springfield House on 11th June this year and a short article on the house and J. INNS appears in their newsletter No.19 available on the web. Best regards Nigel Stone Tel: 01380 812980 Mob: 07798 672662 Myrtle Cottage Low Road Devizes Wilts. SN10 4JY."
Is there some nice person on the list who has Ancestry access that could look up somebody that I have found and tell me who the rest of the family are. The entry that I found is Lily Savage age 1 born Aldershot. Admin County Southampton Civil Parish Aldershot Military in Stanhope and Wellington Lincs. I am hoping that this may be my missing Saville family. Many thanks Pat

I am returning to the list after an absence of several years. My interest is in finding more about my ancestor's mother & grandparents. I think the best first place to look would be the 1841 census. What I know: Jane SOTHEY born 26 May 1836 & baptised at St Michael's in Milverton 21 May 1837. source: Milverton parish register entry #1321 page 166. Her mother was unwed woman named Sarah SOUTHEY. I am hopeful that SKS has the 1841 census of Milverton and can see if there is a Jane SOUTHEY (age 4 or 5) in household with a woman named Sarah. Regards, Al Rose (next update to my GEDCOM will post other SOUTHEY families of Somerset from 1861 and later census) Please visit my GEDCOM posted at URL: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=butchrose
Hello Listers, Have just joined today hoping to find out about some of my ancestors, a Searle family from Bishops Stortford. I have quite a lot of dates and names going back to about 1750, most of which were sent to me by a descendants of Esau Searle who was transported to Australia in 1849. I would like to find out a bit more about how they lived and what Bishops Stortford was like in the late 18th & early 19th centuries. I know there were a lot of Searles in that area and it has taken a time to sort out who my direct line ancestors are. If it hadn't have been for my very very distant cousins in Oz I would still have been struggling. Would love to hear from anyone who can contribute to my (meagre) store of knowledge. I'd like to put "flesh on the bones". Could anyone do two look up for me when they are visiting HALS, please? 1.Baptism at Wormley (source IGI) James son of James and Mary Kempster born 5 Jan 1792 bapt 2 Feb 1792 I would like to know if there is any additional information in the register concerning abode and father's occupation. 2. Allen's Marriage Index for Darey I hope that by looking at the entries for Darey on the index, I may get some leads as to where to look for the baptism of Hannah Darey, who married James Kempster in Sarratt in 1814. If I have the correct pairing, Hannah was born in Herts according to the 1841 census and died in Flaunden on 1 July 1844 aged 46 years. Any help would ge greatly arrpeciated. I have recently received from HALS an indenture from 1832 in which Joseph GROOM, baker, of Bushey sold some land to settle his father's estate. His father, also Joseph GROOM a baker, of Bushey, was a brother of Thomas GROOM a shopkeeper of Chipperfield, Kings Langley who was the original owner of the land but died intestate and when that was settled the land went to Joseph Snr. Sorry if it sounds a bit messy! The land was " customary messuage or tenement commonly called or known as Bottom House with an orchard and pightle or close of land called Common Field." By the way what is a pightle? It appears the land was in the Manor of Kings Langley and was put up for auction in 7 lots at the Rose and Crown Inn, Kings Langley, September 1831 My question is would this land still be around under the same name today and if so where would it be in Kings Langley or has it been swallowed up in a land grab? Secondly would some body have a Pigots of other directory of Hertfordshire that includes Bushey and Kings Langley and if so would they please look to see if a Joseph GROOM, baker, and Thomas GROOM shopkeeper of Chipperfield have been included in it. Joseph died 1830 and Thomas prior to that. Many thanks Deb Wellington, NZ
