Would anyone have knowledge of the family of Walter ASHBY (b. 1843 at Aldbury, Herts) who was a farmer of 500+ acres at Studham from about 1875? His wife was Eliza BAILEY (b.1846 at Studham, d.1899 Studham). They were married at Studham October 17, 1871. Children of Walter and Eliza Ashby were: Gertrude J. Ashby, b. 1873 Aldbury William Henry Ashby, b 1875 Aldbury Florence Lizzie Ashby, b. 1879 Studham, Herts John Ashby, b. 1880 Studham Thomas Ashby, 1883 Studham Annie Ashby, 1884 Studham Marion Ashby, 1886 Studham Daisy Ashby, 1889 Studham Florence Lizzie Ashby married Frank Thomas King in 1906 at St. Mary the Virgin parish church at Oxford University. In 1912 they emigrated to Canada. Florence died in Alberta, Canada in 1938. Florence Ashby and Frank King were my grandparents. I have no knowedge of the members of the family of Florence Ashby aside from the above vital statistics, and I would be very interested to know anything about her family. Thankyou for any information. Sharon Starkey, nee King Vancouver Island, BC, Canada
Hello listers, Still on the trail of the elusive SEARLE'S. Have received a copy of a Hertford Mercury report of the coroner's inquest on John Se(a)rle. In this, it was mentioned that a son was "at GLASGOW's. A disreputable house". The police later found "Jehu (the son) sleeping at GLASGOW's with a prostitute". Can any one tell me whether Glasgow's was a private house, an inn or lodging house? The date of the offence was December 1846. Is there anybody on the list who is researching the family of Noah GEEVES/JEEVES (and other variants) of Hinxworth. According to the Militia List of Hinxworth he was described as a Labourer having 3 children by 1764. I am interested in learning the names of his children, specifically whether he had a daughter named Elizabeth who would have been born c. 1764 and may have married William GILLETT of Ashwell in 1788 at Ashwell. I have been searching for an Elizabeth JEEVES in the vicinity of Ashwell for sometime now and this family is certainly the closest I have found which I have not been able to eliminate. Any help would be much appreciated. Janet.

Hi again, The SMITH I am looking for is George Henry * circa.1880 he had a daughter Elsie Isobel *1903 Watford and married to Mornington William George Howard in 1927. I see that your Joseph and Emily were married in 1905 - so of the same generation as George Henry but with a surname like SMITH ....... hey !!! ..... unless any of these name tie in with your family, it is a long shot. If I come across anything, will let you know. Hi Keith, This might be pure coincidence but I am also researching Smith's in Watford on behalf of my neighbour Lynda Grima. Her father Joseph lives in Malta and one of the family names that came up was Jack but not too sure where he fits in. Hello Keith I think that it would be best to look on the 1837online website for the marriage http://www.1837online.com/ The marriage certificate would give you the name of Jack Smith's father. I suggest you look for the marriage using Margot Rosenburg's name as there will probably be a lot of Jack Smiths around. You will need to buy the viewing 'units' but £5 goes quite a long way. Dear Keith, If you have difficulty finding Margot, it might be an idea not to rule her out as being Margot Rose. In Stevenage in the 1960's we lived next door to a Mr & Mrs Rose, who had changed their name from Rosenberg to sound less Jewish! Good hunting, Valerie Edwards

Hi I have just starting researching maternal great great grandparents, and am trying to trace a Joseph Newton, his siblings and parents. Joseph NEWTON married Susan HAMMOND in 1842 in Brent Pelham. Joseph's father on the certificate was named as John Newton a labourer and he was living in Brent Pelham. Looking at later census images I believe that Joseph was born in 1819. I have a subscription to the Genealogist and searching for Joseph on the 1841 index has an option in Braughing. I know that this is more or less next door so it could be the right person. My question is could anyone please do a look up for me in with reference supplied (H107435.pdf ). In return I have the London discus for 1841 and would willingly do a look up Denise Enfield Middx Ps - I have now done a further search and there is a Joseph Newton in Edwinstree, and also a young (15 year old) Susan Hammond also in Edwinstree. Can someone please let me know where Edwinstree is
Thanks Derick, I did actually have this. When I contacted Herts.Archives they replied "with reference to your criminal ancestors"!! I know that probably four of the immediate family were transported and a Cornelius SEARLE was involved in the crime that cost John his life but Cornelius (and possible Levi) have just surfaced - even the SEARLE descendants in Australia were unsure that Cornelius was in fact related, as he was born in Suffolk. I am awaiting the Hertford Mercury report of the coroners inquest, but still have no idea why Cornelius was born in Suffolk. Hello Listers, Am still trying to get some information on SEARLE family from Bishops Stortford. I have: Thomas SEARLE marr. Hannah GILBEY 1776 John SEARLE B. 1797 marr. Kezia CLARK 1820. John died in Hertford Gaol in 1847. His son Esau was transported in 1848. Another son, Cornelius, who was born in SUFFOLK in 1829 was also transported. Am trying to find out why family were in Suffolk. Further children were born later in Bishops Stortford. John's son William SEARLE born 1821 married (I think Sarah BRADFORD) and they had son Thomas in 1843. I can trace a William and Sarah from 1861 and Thomas and descendants forward from then. I found Kezia SEARLE on 1851 census when it was online for a few days and she was a servant for a family in Hockerill. Apparently she died in South Mill,Bishops Stortford in 1875 but again I can find no record if this or any later census details other than 1851. I have sent for a couple of birth and marriage certs. where applicable but would be grateful if anyone can fill in the missing details.
