Lindsay The marriage in Jun quarter 1937 was James Mills to Elizabeth Grundy. In December 1931 there's a marriage of Louise or Louisa GRUNDY to Joseph H MILLS Birmingham S 6d 438. Hope this is yours. Have you tried this website? www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/palaeography It includes an interactive online palaeography tutorial. Gill
Consider "Palaeography for Family and Local Historians" - Hilary Marshall and "Reading Tudor and Stuart Handwriting" - Lionel Mundy. There is an article about deciphering old handwriting in the current "Your Family Tree" magazine (April 2008). When all else fails, perhaps consider employing an expert who advertizes in family tree magazines. Nope, it's not that one. I think Leigh is in Lancashire.....thanks anyway Someone sent me details of a marriage in Chelsea in 1937 which is far more likely but I have misland the information. And I now know the names are Joseph Mills and Louise Grundy, so it's not the James Mills and Elizabeth Grundy marriage Lindsay In a message dated 29/02/2008 15:27:05 GMT Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Here you are :-) It'll be in your sent folder! Good morning from sunny Samoa. I have recently rejoined this list. I am working here just now and so am using a Samoan address, but my ongoing email address is below. When I return to Australia in May 2008, I will join again with my [email protected] address. I recently had a breakthrough with my family from Hemel Hempstead with the very kind assistance of Chris Reynolds (www.hertfordshire-genealogy.co.uk ). The site that he manages is a gold mine of information. It was a great history lesson to simply walk through the site from town to town reading about it all. My great great grandparents were Richard (1800-1867, born in Kings Langley) and Hannah WOOD (Born abt 1798 in Hemel Hempstead - Maiden name unverified at this stage) from Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire. In the 1851 Census, Richard is a baker. Richard and Hannah Wood had the following children: Stephen Winmill Wood (my great grandfather), Richard, William, Lydia and Henry. Chris Reynolds from Hertfordshire has suggested that Richard Wood (Stephen's father, Henry's grandfather) wife, Hannah is likely to have the surname WINMILL. It makes sense, as in those days there was a reasonable degree of repetitiveness and predictability in the way that people were named. So given that 'Winmill' has been connected to the given name Stephen on two occasions - it may be possible that Hannah's father was named Stephen WINMILL. It becomes more and more interesting as I look at this WINMILL name. It is clear that there are many WINMILL families in and around Hemel Hempstead, where the family that we come from (Richard and Hannah WOOD) were located. The name Winmill is listed against Richard's son Stephen as his second name (in the census documents) and as the third name in his son Frederick Stephen Winmill WOOD, and again as a second name in Richard's daughter's (Lydia Wood) children (she was married to Jospeh FREEMAN and is the sister of Stephen). Lydia Wood married Joseph Freeman and their children were: Frederick Stephen, Mary, Hannah, Emma, Mary, Sarah, Frances. I am on the path trying to track down Winmill's. I have found a Stephen WINMILL in Hemel Hempstead who could be the father of Hannah Wood (maiden name unknown - wife of Richard above). This Stephen WINMILL was born in 1770. His parents were William and Mary WINMILL. I found this record on the IGI (Mormon) website and so it is not verified at this stage. My great grand father - Stephen Winmill WOOD (1829-1910) - married Adelaide LOVETT (1834-1910 Born in Frithsden/Berkhamsted) and their children were born in Hemel Hempstead and were: Henry John (my grandfather), Elizabeth Winmill, George, Walter, William A, Emma, Frederick Lewis (may also be referred to as just Lewis), Alfred Stephen, Frederick Stephen Winmill. Adelaide LOVETT's parents were George LOVETT (1791-1867 Born in Mitcham/Croydon Surrey) and Clotilde (Abt 1801 - 1857, maiden name unknown - born in France). My questions are: (a) I am wondering if anyone has come across anyone from this family (three strands - WOOD, LOVETT and WINMILL). (b) I am also wondering if anyone has any details of the name WINMILL. (c) I have noted in my searching on the internet that the name WINMILL may also be spelled WINDMILL or WYNDMILL. I am not sure about the accuracy of this. I look forward in anticipation to any of your ideas, Regards Libby Elizabeth McM (Working in Samoa until 11 May 2008) Samoa AH - [email protected] Australian & ongoing email: [email protected] (gets me anytime, any place)

Hi all I asked about this recently. Having obtained a birth certificate of one of the children I have now established the Christian names of the parents. I am looking for a marriage of Joseph Henry MILLS to Louise GRUNDY. I presume it would have taken place in the Barnet area but really have no idea.
