    3. Dear Celia, I would suggest you are looking for Sele Farm. Sele House and Sele (corn) Mill and Sele Grange are clearly listed on my copy of an 1898 Old Ordnance Survey Map (Godfrey Maps) at the North western side of Hertford just south of Bengeo near Welwyn Road and Hertfingfordbury Road. It comes under St Andrew's parish. On a mid 1990's tourist street map of Hertford a Sele School and Sele Road is listed obviously commemorating the landmark which appears to be long gone. If it is important to learn more, try asking the Hertford Museum, they can often help. Valerie Edwards, Vancouver Island, Canada Looking for HART in East Herts. 3. Hello, I'm hoping that one of the list may be visiting the Herts Archives and if so would be kind enough to do a look up for me. I have found the c. of Sarah Collins in the IGI - Sarah dau. of Francis and Sarah Collins c. 25 May 1835 in Great Berkhampstead. I would very much like to know if there are anymore details such as the occupation of Francis Collins. Any help would be very welcome, I live in East Sussex and would be more than happy to do any lookups at the Lewes archives in return. Kind regards, Brenda

    1. Re: [HRT] Edwards of Northaw, North Mimms, South Mimms

    3. Hello List Just an update on my Edwards line. My cousin and I have located our Samuel Edwards born in Northaw in Feb 1787 to Thomas Edwards and his wife Elizabeth. No maiden name was given and the only other birth was an Elizabeth Edwards in 1801 with father's name given as Thomas. No mother's name. After seeing the posting about the Herts Marriage list I did a search for marriages of a Thomas Edwards with wife's name Elizabeth. The best hit I could find was Thomas Edwards to Elizabeth Plant in South Mimms on Oct 28, 1788 almost two years after the birth of Samuel so possible but probably not likely. Based on the Militia lists for Northaw and North Mimms there was a Thomas Edwards in Northaw in 1758. this would have given him an approximate birth year of 1740. The IGI has the above Thomas and Elizabeth Edwards, but no other information. However, one entry has their birth years as 1762 and 1766. If there are any list members researching Edwards or Plant in the area of South Mimms (Middlesex/Herts) I'd love to hear from you. Terry Edwards

We Yorkshire experts have the famous Dade Registers to enthuse over, in which substantially more detail was given than normal, but these relate purely to baptisms and not marriages. It was a very conscientious vicar indeed who added parents' names and I suspect this probably only occurred at marriages of the upper classes and nobility and not the hoi polloi! As for marriages by licence, I think it tends to depend on whether the father was a bondsman and mentioned in the allegation. The licence itself very rarely survives because it was given to the groom to give to the vicar. -- Roy Stockdill Professional genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." 3. Hi, I have to disagree with Roy's statement, that 'You never get the names of fathers on pre-1837 marriages'. Occasionally, albeit too rarely, the priest does occasionally add notes to the margins or include names of parents. Also, if the marriage was conducting BY LICENCE instead of the normal after banns, then you have another reference point in the licence itself, and these usually do have father's names and sometimes mother's names as well. What you can expect are..... The names of both parties. Parishes of residence both parties, whether "of this parish" or some other. The groom's occupation. If one of the parties is a minor, i.e. under 21, whether the marriage is with permission of parents or guardian. Marital status, i.e. bachelor, spinster, widowed.
