Anything about Samuel and Sarah's > ancestry also much appreciated > > Any theories why Sarah moved 55km would be intriguing too!> There was usually a very simple reason why people moved relatively long distances in those days - and 55km or about 35 miles isn't a lot - and that was to seek work. What were called hiring fairs were held in major towns, at which farm workers and domestic servants offered their services to would-be employers. A vast number of young women were in domestic service in large houses. If Sarah was one such and she went to a hiring fair, say, 10 miles from where she lived and was hired by an employer who lived 25 miles in the other direction, then there is your possible answer. If you've ever seen the film of Thomas Hardy's novel, Far From the Madding Crowd, there is a scene of a typical hiring fair in that in which men are lined up and offering their services as shepherds and ag labs. This accounted for a good deal of movement in the 18th and 19th centuries. -- Roy Stockdill Professional genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." Presume he has since passed away but have no knowledge of this. Any help would be greatly appreciated, whether alive or dead. Believe he also served in the RAF during the Second World War. 3. Having been to this cemetery on more than one occasion, I can but only add my congratulations. It is large although not apparently "well filled". However there seems to be no obvious planning, old and comparatively new mixed together. Some of the old inscriptions are almost illegible and low down making them all the more difficult to decipher. 3. Hi Judy According to my tree, William Cooper 1795 probably died before 1803 as another William was born to this couple in 1803. They were the sons of William Cooper and Frances Pooley, married 8 May 1786 Ashwell (just a short distance from Baldock). Frances was born 1765 Ashwell, daughter of Thomas POOLEY & Rebeckah JEAVE m 12 Oct 1757 Litlington, Cambs. William 1803 was probably too young to marry in 1816. 3. Dear Gay, Thank you so much for all your research. Yes I had also found a marriage between a William Hanscombe and Sarah Jarvis but somewhere in my research files the name Sarah Francois is the connection to the Hanscombe line, but as yet Icannot bring it altogether. I do not know the age of Elizabeth Ada Hanscombe or where she was born so have no era to place them in. All I know is Joseph Rolfe born in 1844 married Elizabeth Ada Hanscombe, when I don't know. I presume as I cannot find them in the UK the link must be in some other country. Will continue searching and thanks so much for your time.
