    3. Cassy, This family seems to have suffered badly from mistranscription. Did it say what the father's occupation was on Harriet's marriage certificate? Did it indicate that he was still alive? Do you know which of the Warner daughters was her mother? I don't think you can assume that Thomas Brindell married Mary about 1846. They could have been married well before this, after George's birth or not at all. FreeBMD has a death of a Thomas Brindell in 1855. You would need to order the certificate to find out if it is the right one. There is then a marriage of a Mary Brindell in 1864 but this time it's not a case of mis-transcription the entry is too difficult to read to confirm a place and other details. This might explain, though, why there are no other census entries for Thomas. In the mean time have you got this one of Harriet? In 1861 she's a servant at the Green Dragon in the Colney area of St. Albans - I think thepub is still there Harriet S Warner Age: 17 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1844 Relation: Servant Gender: Female Where born: St Peter, Hertfordshire, England Civil Parish: St Alban St Peter Ecclesiastical parish: Colney County/Island: Hertfordshire Country: England Good hunting, Ro --- cassy <[email protected]> wrote: > Hi All > Can anyone help with this please , has I am tring to have another go > at it > My gr gr grandmother Harriet Warner was brought up by her > grandparents > Edward and Mary Warner , has her parents never married but on > Harriets > wedding cert > to Thomas Franklin in 1864 she put down her father was Thomas Brindle > Have never been able to find out anything at all about this man > Below is a person who might be my Thomas Brindle but not sure , but > I > could never find > him on another census > Can anyone help please > Cassy > Assistant Admin Black Country > Potteries, and Wolverhampton Lists > > > I . 3. Cindy, I've just had a look at my 1793 map of Hertfordshire ( J Carey ) and there is definitely somewhere called SLOWMANS near Watling Street south of St Albans - the other side of the railway from Frogmore Unfortunately the map is in a frame, so I can\t scan it and send to you. However, it is online at <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~genmaps/genfiles/COU_files/ENG/HRT/cary_hrt_1793.htm > (lots of other old maps of Herts on this site) HTH Anne On 4 Jul 2008, at 08:32, Anne Peat wrote: > > On 4 Jul 2008, at 04:56, H & V Edwards wrote: > >> >> >> >> >> PS. 3. Barbara, At the time you are searching, no marriage could take place in a non-conformist church without the local superintendent registrar, or his deputy, being present. All marriages SHOULD therefore be in the GRO Marriage Index. I emphasise "should" because it is known that these indices (on which FreeBMD are based) have many errors and omissions. The Registrar General's certificates are being re-indexed as part of the DOVE project and should be appearing online sometime next year. Unfortunately even these certificates are copies and there is still the possibility that a certificate went missing before arriving at the GRO. (I have three such missing ones, only one of which I have been able to locate at a local registrar's.) It might be worth your while getting in touch with the local registrar of where you think the marriage might have taken place if you can't wait until 2009. There are a large number of Registrar's records now being published, district by district, on UKBMD, which you could try. http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/ Hope this might help Sandra Regards Sandra ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, July 04, 2008 11:35 PM Subject: Re: [HRT] LOVEJOY > Hi Elizabeth, > > Thanks for information, I think the reason they were in Essex was for > work. 3. Hello, I am trying to find members of the Jessop (possibly JESSUP) family in the St Albans area on behalf of Victor Raymond Jesso(u)p. Victor was born in the 1930s in the Maida Vale area of London. Thank you, Pippa Edwards, Brighton.

    3. Hi Dean It's not always the databases! You may find instances of the following: 1. The wife spells names differently from the husband 2. The name varies from County to County, if the family moved 3. The Vicar "hears" something different from the Census Enumerator 4. Then Miss Transcription joins in..for her share of the fun!! 5. And then the family uses nicknames because there are too many Johns, Williams, Georges, Mary Anns and Sarahs in the village... so you get Jacks, Willies, Pollys and Sallys... Who needs Sudoko, just try Family History! ;-) Best of British! Marlene Dean Evans wrote: > Thanks Marlene, you have given me a breakthrough. 3. Dear Cindy & Anne, Revising my search to look for a Sarah Tomlin, (whoops, I didn't read Cindy's e-mail properly!), I find Sarah Brett married James Tomlin in 1815 in both Hitchin and Great Gaddesdon! (according to the IGI Family Search .org - however, the latter would appear to be from LDS members rather than from parish records, so is rather suspect!). My Herts FHS 1851 census disc gives Sarah Tomlin as being born in Standon? (Transcriber's question mark not mine!). I must say I wondered prior to seeing this if it might have been Standon, as the Brett name crops up in this parish, as well as Brent Pelham and Furneaux Pelham. Standon was sometimes known as Stondon (slurring any of these places doesn't conclusively sound like Slamen or Slowman though! Does the marriage entry in the parish registers just say "of this parish" for the bride? Valerie, Canada. PS. After another comprehensive look at my 1766 Dury and Andrews map I have found "Slonmans" just about 1 mile west of Colney Street off the Watling Street Road (south of St. Albans) which appears to be obliterated by the M25 on a modern Ordnance Survey map. It would not appear to be a village just perhaps the name of a group of houses. But here I am guessing as the map is not sophisticated. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Anne Peat" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, July 03, 2008 9:56 AM Subject: Re: [HRT] Slowman and Sarah BRETT > Dear Cindy and Valerie - I have also spent some time looking for > Slowman and for Sarah Brett/Tomlin . 3. Dear Cindy and Valerie - I have also spent some time looking for Slowman and for Sarah Brett/Tomlin . On the 1851 census Ancestry has her transcribed as coming from Stamen Herts.( It could read Slamen - but that doesn't help much! In the 1861 census she says she comes from Hitchin. The only Slowman I could find mention of anywhere was a farm south of St Albans - there were some deeds in HALS and there is now a Slowmans Close - I presume where the farm once stood.
